YearComment
2011 After his June release from the Red Sox, Joe Nelson spent a month in Tacoma, where he failed to curb the control problems that have made his fringy stuff unpalatable in the majors. As an advanced practitioner of the Vulcan changeup, he must be aware that his continued presence on a major-league roster would be highly illogical.
2010 It took Nelson 13 seasons of toil through seven organizations (including a brief pass through the Devil Rays' system in 2005) and a year lost to labrum surgery before he was able to reach 50 innings in a single major-league season. He finally did so with the Marlins in 2008, and his reward for that effort was a $1.3 million contract with the Rays for 2009. Consistent with last year's expectation that he'd lose ground, Nelson lost more than 2.5 mph on his already slow average fastball and changeup. His strikeout rate suffered, and both his walk and fly-ball rates skyrocketed, with some additional bad luck doubling his home-run rate. His ERA conceals even worse news: his 5.83 Fair Run Average was the highest among Rays relievers with at least 15 innings. Optioned to Triple-A on August 1, he was DFA'd, outrighted, and ultimately granted free agency at the end of the season. Such is the life of a journeyman reliever.
2009 After missing 2007 with a torn labrum and never rating as a great relief option in the past, Nelson managed to come back and punch out over three times as many hitters as he handed out unintentional walks to. He doesn't have great stuff, with a fastball that only occasionally clears 90, and he was hit-lucky on the statistical side of things—his BABIP is roughly 60 points too low given his line-drive rate. Expect some ugly regression; the Marlins may well have, non-tendering the journeyman this winter. He signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract with the Rays in December, and we'll see if maintaining his sunshine state of mind helps him maintain his luck on balls in play.
2007 If closing is such a mystical art capable of being performed by only a select few, how do you explain Nelson, a 31-year-old journeyman who had thrown less than five major league innings before 2006, getting thrust into the role out of desperation and going 9-for-10 in save opportunities? The irony is that all those opportunities came in August and September, when the shine wore off on the rookie; Nelson had a 1.35 ERA at the end of July and a 7.43 ERA thereafter. Even a pitcher with a 7.43 ERA can save 90 percent of save opportunities if he gets enough three-run leads. The saves notwithstanding, Nelson is still a journeyman pitcher best treated as the fungible asset he is. The Royals agree; their many bullpen acquisitions this winter mean Nelson will be fighting for a roster spot in March.
