| 2010-04-15 13:00:00 | Was Andre Miller the free agent acquisition of the year? Other marquee pick-ups like Hedo Turkoglu or Ben Gordan woefully underperformed. Only David Lee was better, but he didn't get any offers when he was a restricted free agent and he essentially just finished out his contract with the Knicks. (Sam from Portland) | Yeah, I think that's a pretty good take. Lee was the only player with a higher WARP total who was a free agent last year. Paul Millsap was third. It depends on whether you're comparing marquee signings only or include someone like Channing Frye who provided a ton of production for very little salary, but as compared to the other big-money signings Miller looks terrific with the benefit of hindsight. Hedo Turkoglu, not so much. (Kevin Pelton (Basketball)) |
| 2010-04-15 13:00:00 | Rank these in order of who will be the biggest FA bust of 2010: David Lee, Amar'e, Boozer. (Ken from VA) | Wait, am I assuming they're all going to be busts? I would see Boozer, Stoudemire, Lee, in that order. I don't see Lee as being particularly likely to bust, and Stoudemire is young enough that motivation is the biggest question mark in his case. Was his second half because of his impending free agency or because he wasn't right after sitting out for so long? (Kevin Pelton (Basketball)) |
| 2010-02-12 13:00:00 | Saw some Synergy data recently w/c indicated 15% of the Knicks' shot attempts come on post-ups, and by my personal observation, they don't really have an accomplished back to the basket player. Last year, Quentin Richardson was at least posted up a fair amount against leaner wings.
Does D'Antoni need to diversify his offense and get someone like Bosh or Boozer for 2010 (assuming the primary FAs stay)? Right now, almost everything is facing the basket and mostly jumpers...even David Lee. (BK from Boston, MA) | I don't think you need a post scorer in the NBA 2010, and I'm not sure how comfortable D'Antoni would be coaching that style. What the Knicks need is better guard play, given their current group is adequate at the very best. (Kevin Pelton (Basketball)) |
| 2010-02-12 13:00:00 | Let's talk about David Lee for a second. He's a nice player but a bit one-dimensional (not a good defender) and not worth an enormous contract. What should the Knicks do with him? Am I crazy for thinking that they should try to trade him? (Tyrus from New York, NY) | His scoring and rebounding would seem to be two dimensions. Given Lee's contract, he's very difficult to trade, so not seeing this. (Kevin Pelton (Basketball)) |
| 2009-11-12 13:00:00 | David Lee currently has the worst adjusted plus/minus on the Knicks, and his defensive issues have really been exploited so far. Would the persistence of this hurt his contract value next year, or would better teams feel comfortable that they could "protect" him in their systems (in a way the Knicks can't)? (BK from Boston, MA) | I wouldn't read anything into adjusted plus-minus yet. His defense was problematic but not a disaster last year, so that's one of the things about this year's Knicks that baffles me. Ultimately, I think most other teams see Lee as a PF, not a C, so it's not nearly as large an issue. (Kevin Pelton (Basketball)) |
| 2009-10-15 13:00:00 | Is David Lee going to be good trade bait for the Knicks come February? (Cryogite from New York, NY) | I'd have to spend more time looking this up on CBAFAQ.com than I have during a chat, but I think he's got a base-year contract and would not be easy to trade. It's possible he might not be tradeable at all since he's on a one-year deal. Can't remember off the top of my head, though. (Kevin Pelton (Basketball)) |
| 2009-10-15 13:00:00 | Random question - How often do you use ESPN's trade machine? (Rob from Oakland) | I loaded it up to look at David Lee's contract this morning, but in general not very often. Nothing wrong with the Trade Machine, but making up trades isn't really my interest. (Kevin Pelton (Basketball)) |
| 2009-10-15 13:00:00 | David Lee trade bait? I look at him and see a nice, complementary player for the Knicks to hold onto. (dianagramr from NYC) | Going to be tough for them to hang on to him. Getting him back was positive for this season, but the contract they gave him will make it tough to not renounce his rights this summer. (Of course, they could renounce him and just sign him as they would any other free agent.) (Kevin Pelton (Basketball)) |
| 2009-05-15 13:00:00 | How do you see the Knicks dealing with their Nate Robinson and David Lee question marks? Do they cut them loose? And all the talk about Steph Curry and the Knicks, would he be a good fit for them? He seems like really like Mike's style of play but I wonder if he'll be a productive NBA player. (seanpotter from LA) | Without any research, I think they likely keep one of the two, with Lee as the slight favorite. It all depends upon how the market shakes out, however. (Kevin Pelton (Basketball)) |
| 2009-04-24 13:00:00 | Boozer or Millsap, if you can only keep one after the season? (or alternatively, if you're a team with dollars wanting to spend on a free agent PF) (BK from Boston, MA) | I'm on the record as saying Millsap. If money was no object, Boozer is the better player, yes. However, he's going to get a deal at least twice as lucrative, and there's no way to gap in production is that large--especially when you consider Boozer's history of injuries.
I think there were times this season that Jazz fans might have been ready to drive Boozer out of town with pitchforks (do they still do that in Salt Lake City?), but last night was a reminder of the kind of force he can be when he's right. Naturally the best hope for Utah is that the bad economy drives down salaries to the point where they can keep both players. This will be an interesting summer for mid-tier big men. You've got Millsap and David Lee both on the market, and it's uncertain how much money will be out there for those guys. There could be some real bargains along the line of the summer of 2002. (Kevin Pelton) |
| 2009-04-24 13:00:00 | Which teams would benefit most from signing Millsap or Lee? Would any team be able to sign both and, if so, should they? (krissbeth from watertown, ma) | Off the top of my head, Memphis seems like a pretty good fit for Millsap. They're hoping Darrell Arthur becomes that kind of player next to Marc Gasol, but his first season wasn't highly encouraging. I could see David Lee complementing "Shock and Hawes" in Sacramento if the Kings look to the perimeter with their lottery pick and they decide to spend their cap space instead of rolling it over and saving money. (Kevin Pelton) |
| 2009-01-30 14:00:00 | What offer sheet should we expect for David Lee at season end? Thanks! (Tony from Brooklyn, NY) | Interesting question. RFAs who are worth more than the mid-level but less than the max are always somewhat challenging to predict because they are so heavily dependent on one of the teams with cap space having interest. I would guess something in the 5/40-50 range, but maybe that's a little pessimistic from the Knicks' perspective. I would not be stunned to see them get a bargain. (Kevin Pelton) |
