2009 Scott Elarton was placed on the restricted list in late June for an undisclosed personal reason. It is unclear whether he will return to professional ball, but his ERA this millennium is 5.67; only the immortal Jose Lima (6.00) exceeded him in a comparable number of innings.
2007 Wow, Scott Elarton hurt his shoulder--who saw that coming? If you`re wondering why so many Royals fans are trying to defend the Gil Meche signing, consider that these are the kind of free agent signings they have grown accustomed to. Elarton might be back by midseason; if his fastball doesn`t return with him, would anyone notice?
2006 Despite becoming the fourth member of the Indians` rotation to post a career-best walk rate in 2005 (the lone exception was Kevin Millwood, who posted his second-best career mark), Elarton made no other meaningful improvements. Due to a league-leading flyball rate, he still gives up homers in bunches-at one point he allowed a homer in ten straight starts-while his strikeout rate continues its career-long downward trend. Were he to pitch in a big ballpark with a stellar outfield defense, he could show superficial improvement for a year or two, but his tastes seem to run towards the apocalyptic, having signed a two-year deal with the Royals.
2005 One of baseball's most extreme flyball pitchers, Elarton getting his career back on track in Colorado was about as likely as Ben Affleck winning the Academy Award for Best Actor... in a musical... of "Schindler's List." The promise that Elarton showed as a young pitcher is a thousand miles and a million home runs ago, but he did turn a corner of sorts after the All-Star break, posting a 4.12 ERA in 91.2 innings. Given his tendencies that's probably as good as it's going to get, barring a move to Safeco Field or a planet with heavier gravity.
