2008 Villarreal has pitched reasonably well in low-leverage relief the past two seasons, making 47 of his 109 of his entrances with the Braves trailing by at least two runs. Traded to the Astros for outfielder Josh Anderson, he'll be used in higher-leverage spots in Chad Qualls's old seventh-inning role as Qualls attempts to become the closer. The new role is slightly above Villarreal's skill set.
2007 Villarreal mostly worked out of the bullpen after arriving from Arizona, but was thrown into the breach as a starter in a moment of need in late August. It`s a bit difficult to determine what his role might be this year, but he`s a hard thrower, doesn`t walk many batters, and put close to 50 percent of his batted balls on the ground. He`s not yet a key cog in the bullpen, but he could be.
2006 Step 1: put Oscar Villarreal in the bullpen. Step 2: Keep him healthy by ______. Step 3: Profit. Villarreal had nerve transposition surgery in his elbow, battled shoulder problems, and passed a kidney stone to boot. Like Valverde, he`s effective when healthy, has a good track record? that portends future success, and will be an injury risk every time he steps on the mound. That`s not a good combination, but we`ll see if he`ll become any more durable as a Brave, now that he`s been dealt with Cormier in the Johnny Estrada deal.
2005 After grabbing the fifth starter's spot from John Patterson, Villarreal suffered flexor tendon problems and bone spurs in his elbow. He's the leading candidate for the fifth starter's spot going into spring training, and he's expected to be healthy and ready to go. It might take him a bit to get everything together, but there's a performance record here that indicates a good chance of being effective.
