BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 "You're kidding me," Horacio Ramirez exclaimed when his agent told him the news. "I'm going back to the big leagues? Is there a strike? Am I a scab? Because I sure don't remember being as good as the regular players. They hit me so hard—so, so hard. Oh, I hope I'm a scab."
2009 Released by the Mariners during spring training, converted to relief by the Royals, and traded to the White Sox for scraps, Horacio Ramirez survives due to the arm he throws with and despite his inability to retire lefties or strike anyone out (4.1 K/9 career). The Royals took him back as a free agent in December, signing him to a one-year contract.
2008 When you say that a pitcher who finished the season with a 7.16 ERA was "lucky," it's usually meant as a platitude on the order of "at least you have your health" or "you could be living in war-torn central Africa right now," but we mean it literally. Ramirez finished the 2007 season with an 8-7 record, one game over .500, when by all rights he should have been about six games under. By our account, that made him the sixth-luckiest pitcher in baseball behind Paul Byrd, Chien Ming Wang, C.C. Sabathia, Justin Verlander, and Josh Beckett-you'll note, none of those other guys had an ERA in the sevens. Like the others, Ramirez was the beneficiary of some of the best run support in the league, which boosted his win totals; unlike the others, he did precious little to merit the support, managing only five quality starts in twenty chances.
2007 Ramirez couldn`t stay healthy through a second consecutive season in 2006, losing time to both a fatigued hamstring and torn ligament in his middle finger. When healthy, Ramirez tries to elicit weak ground balls from hitters, resulting in excessive nibbling and high pitch counts, which in turn result in high walk rates and short outings. This makes him a poor choice as a starter despite decent ERAs. The Mariners were expecting a fourth starter when they traded the electric Rafael Soriano for him, but considering his history of poor health, his lousy peripherals, and the move to a more challenging league, they`ll be lucky to get someone who deserves to start at all.
2006 As a fifth starter promoted to #3 in the wake of rotation mayhem, you can at least say that he took the ball every fifth day and ate innings. But of all Braves pitchers to throw 200-plus innings during the Mazzone era, none finished with a worse RA+ than Ramirez`s 96, and only Greg Maddux in 2003 (98) joined him in being worse than the adjusted league average. His peripherals are brutal; his ERA might have been half a run higher. The one thing he`s got going for him is a significant platoon split (2003-2005: .247/.309/.358 vs. lefties, .278/.346/.460 vs. righties), so if he wants to stick around on first-division clubs, he`d be better off as a LOOGY.
2005 Ramirez is an example of the type of pitcher whose stuff does a decent job of getting guys out at the minor league level, but abandons him against hitters of the major league stripe. He put up passable run-prevention numbers in Atlanta in 2003, but the peripherals didn't justify them. Last season, in 60.1 innings, he struck out 31 against 30 walks for the Braves. The sooner the organization realizes his only hope for an extended stay in the majors is as a reliever, the better off everyone will be.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2008-12-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)It appears to me that Dayton Moore in essence swapped Leo Nunez, RamRam, and any semblance of financial flexibility for Coco Crisp, Mike Jacobs and Kyle Farnsworth? Doesn't this series of moves seem, um, counter-productive? Do you see a worthwhile plan here?
(BL from Bozeman)
You left out spending $1.8 million on Horacio Ramirez (IIRC). I like the Crisp move as a win-now kind of transaction, but I savaged the Jacobs move for cause--some might think he's a win-now pickup, but he's just a placeholder, and Farnsworth and Ramirez are even less. This isn't progress, it's cosmetics, and like anything hastily slapped together, it'll melt in the summer sun. (Christina Kahrl)
