2012-11-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)What moves do you see the Giants making to fill their outfield?
(baseballjunkie from SF)
Thanks for the question, baseballjunkie.

I don't expect the Giants to do anything fancy — in fact, it seems that Sabean is once again prioritizing retaining the players who contributed to the championship run. With Pence staying in right field, I think they'll do their best to re-sign Pagan, and perhaps simply add a better reserve outfielder than Xavier Nady to share time with Gregor Blanco in left. Blanco doesn't exactly fit the power-hitting left fielder profile, but he does a lot of other things well and could be an adequate, cheap starter. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-09-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you envision Xavier Nady making an impact for the gyros (knock on wood) we make the playoffs? Or is he just a filler
(Cain you suck my posey from SF)
I don't see Nady making a big impact, but he's better now than Francisco Peguero is, which is what the Giants need. I'd still rather see Gregor Blanco out there for his glove, but anyone who won't hack at sliders darting for their back foot is an upgrade at the moment. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-04-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)I love the Daily Hit List, at least now that the Nats are near the top. If they don't start hitting, though, I don't see that as sustainable. It appears that the Nats are trying to get Tyler Moore to play LF so he can provide some of the needed pop. Assuming that some of that translates as it has every time he has moved up, would it make sense to have him learn LF in the bigs so that we no longer have to see Xavier Nady or even Roger Bernadina?
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
Thanks! The Hit List is fun to write, so I'm glad you're enjoying it. I understand we are endeavoring to add comments soon so that should make it even more interactive.

I agree the Nats will need some more offense if they want to make the next level, proverbially speaking. My guess though is that any additional offensive boost will come in trade. Unless you think Bryce Harper can play in the majors now. I'm dubious of that, but I'd bow to Kevin Goldstein if he has a different answer. (Matthew Kory)
2010-04-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Everyone lauded Jack Z. for ripping off Jim Hendry and the Cubs by unloading Carlos Silva and getting Milton Bradley. What say you after two weeks? Looks like Milton is just waiting to explode and ruin the clubhouse. Maybe he just is not that good. Oh, let me remind you, Seattle gave the Cubs a few million on top of everything else.
(Trey from San Diego)
They would have traded Bradley for a case of Old Style to whomever chipped in a little cash. Getting Silva is neither here nor there. Bradley had to go and there is no one in Chicago shedding any tears over his departure. That said, the Cubs' lineup is decidedly ordinary in the middle. When Derrek Lee sat out the other day, Xavier Nady batted cleanup--with a righty on the mound. I know clubs overrate chemistry and believe me, they spend a lot of time worrying about it. But Bradley is in a class all his own. For what its worth, I've always found Bradley to be articulate and polite, if not exactly outgoing. The guy just has no impulse control. (Bradford Doolittle)
2010-01-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Xavier Nady any kind of positive for the Cubs? Sad that adding a 4th outfielder is possibly the triumphant move of the off-season.
(Leroy Brown from Downtown)
That's if he can stay healthy, a big if, but at least he's potentially an upgrade on Reed Johnson. And the latter part... wasn't that what we could say about signing Marlon Byrd? I suppose there's the loudly trumpeted Pyrrhic victory of making Milton Bradley go away, but Carlos Silva's going to make people miss Al Nipper. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-01-19 15:30:00 (link to chat)How much do you think Xavier Nady can possibly command? And also, don't you think a couple of mil for a guy they gave up "prospects" for would make sense for the Yanks?
(Sal C from Brooklyn)
You put "prospects" in quotes correctly. As much as I hate to say it, Nady wouldn't be a bad signing if the Yankees are going to restrict him to platoon work most of the time. That said, I'd rather have someone like Rocco Baldelli, who you can at least run out to center for Granderson now and again. Nady doesn't give you that kind of versatility. (Steven Goldman)
2009-04-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)I've heard from a very credible source (i.e., front office) that the Yankees had a deal in place with the Reds: Francisco Cordero for Xavier Nady (killed by the Reds' owner). Should the Yankees revisit that trade and plug in a different name to help solve their bullpen issues? They could go Mets-style and us Cordero as the 8th inning guy.
(Waker from Brooklyn)
Well, that trade won't happen now with Nady's elbow one more hard throw from blowing out. It would have been a good trade for both teams, though. (John Perrotto)
2009-02-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)As its currently constructed, the Yankees roster seems to have too many OF/DH types to let everyone play everyday. Who loses out here on everyday player status?
(Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium)
Of the candidates, all with limitations, I feel that Xavier Nady is the most limited, basically a RH platoon player who happened to have a nice BABIP run for three months. The real issue is that the only CF, Melky Cabrera, has been in decline for years despite his young age. My sense is that, health permitting, the PT goes Damon, Matsui, Swisher, Nady, Cabrera, Gardner. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-12-04 13:30:00 (link to chat)Joe, what do you think the Yankees plan is for the outfield in 09'? As a fan, I think I rather see swisher or a signed abreu back in right rather than Nady as a 155 game starter. Why not play swisher there and sign teixeira? Any chance of that?
(SnakeDoctor18 from NY)
It's the plan I've been advocating all offseason. Mark Teixeria is the best FA since Alex Rodriguez's first time around. If the Yankees think Xavier Nady, who just had a BABIP spike for two months and was Xavier Nady otherwise, is an everyday corner outfielder in the AL, they're insane. He's just a guy, and exactly the type of guy--not someone who has good ABs--who they had too many of last year. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should the Yankees trade for Swisher preclude them from going after Texiera? What's your opinion of Swisher?
(Eric from Manorville)
Let's start here, since this is what's on my mind anyway. Well, that and the awful, hideous Wolfman Jack impersonator that is on Sirius/XM's 60s channel just now. I hated that guy before, and now he's on in the daytime. I like Swisher and his power/OBP approach and I think he's going to rebound nicely for the Yankees. As many (including myself over at YESnetwork.com) have pointed out, his BABIP numbers from last year argue loudly for a case of extreme bad luck this year. Now, I love Swisher as a roamer, a guy who can help you at both OF corners, 1B, and CF in a pinch. I DON'T like him as a reason not to get Mark Teixeira. A lot of commentators are assuming that is the case, that Swisher signals the Yankees are out of the Teixeira business. I'm not sure, and Brian Cashman sounded equivocal. Teixeira is a star 1B. Swisher isn't. What Swisher could be a star of is helping the team stay above replacement at four positions depending on injury, or a star of getting rid of Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, or Xavier Nady. Especially Nady. The Yankees are crazy focused on pitching right now, when they need to be looking at offense and defense. Teixeira would help with both... And he'll be valuable for many more years than Sabathia will. I'll stop now. (Steven Goldman)
2008-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Aaron Heilman for Xavier Nady? Who says no?
(Brian from brooklyn)
Well, the Mets already had the pleasure of Nady's company once and moved him along--and the Yankees don't really need Heilman... after last year, I don't know if anyone needs Heilman. I guess he'll bounce back, maybe. (Steven Goldman)
2008-08-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Wikipedia's list of position players who have had Tommy John surgery: Rocco Baldelli, Joe Borchard, Shin-Soo Choo, Chris Denorfia, Rusty Greer, Luis Gonzalez, Matt Holliday, Norris Hopper, Cezar Izturis, Kelly Johnson, Xavier Nady, and Vance Wilson. Also, Jose Canseco could be included but doesn't really count since he blew out his arm while pitching.
(Gump from nyc)
Jimmy Wales is a great guy, but .... man, that's a really incomplete list. (Will Carroll)
2008-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Joe, Xavier Nady is demonstrating his desire to fulfill one of the corner outfield spots for the 2009 Yankees. Xavier was a highly touted 2nd rd. draft prospect for the S.D. Padres. Is his current stride one of a career year or his finally hitting his stride and a portent of finer things to come. Do you foresee the Yankees signing him to a long term deal or letting him go for the draft prospects?
(ccarroll999 from Ridgefield, Ct.)
Nady's having a BABIP spike. Everything else about his season is pretty much refective of his career, and if you want to make a comparison, it'd be to Gary Matthews Jr.'s 2006 campaign, and we see what's happened since in that case. Nady is a useful fourth outfielder/platoon guy, worth a roster spot but not a multi-year deal. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-07-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)What is the story with Adam Dunn? From everything I've read, there's overwhelming apathy (if that's not an oxymoron) toward a 28-year-old guy who generally puts up 40-HR, 100-RBI, 100-RS, 100-BB, .380-OBP seasons, and whose defense seems to have made some improvements. Why are media types and general managers so unwilling to see Dunn's prodigious talents and instead focus on the things he does poorly? It really seems like we're in a bizarro world every time I read another thing about how there is no interest in Dunn, how he might not even be offered arbitration (as Joel Sherman once reported in the NY post). It just seems absurd to me. Thoughts?
(BDesrochers from New York, NY)
I'm with you. At worst, he's better than Xavier Nady on a true talent basis, though on a value or short-term basis, you can argue for Nady. I'd think that Dunn would have value, but over and over, there's just not much interest. Makes me wonder how he'll fare on the free agent market, especially given no room at the inn for both Texas teams. (Will Carroll)
2008-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Nate, Can the Pirates (with white flag flying) trade for decent pitching prospects without giving up what may be baseball's most productive outfield? or should they just wait for Nady and Bay to hit free agency and take the supplemental picks? Thanks, Frank
(Frank from Las Vegas)
To fail to trade Xavier Nady would be the mistake of the century. This is a career year being had by a C+ ballplayer, and to continue to get lumped in with Jason Bay in all these discussions is inflating his brand. (Nate Silver)
2008-06-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Xavier Nady is the missing piece to the Rays lineup? What would it take to acquire Nady if the Pirates became sellers? Jeff Niemann +?
(Tommy from OPS, FL)
They could use some help against lefties, and Nady would likely come at a nominal cost. (Dayn Perry)
2008-06-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Why do you think the Rays would prefer to bring in a pitcher like Sabathia as opposed to a true right fielder to add some power and mitigate the Hinske/Gomes/Gross/Floyd experience?
(Stephanie from DC)
I'm not so sure they would prefer to bring in Sabathia. The question was if the Rays had would it took to get Sabathia. I think adding someone like Xavier Nady would make more sense than Sabathia. (John Perrotto)
2008-06-02 12:00:00 (link to chat)Xavier Nady is probably the most popular name among NY talk-radio callers trying to fix the Mets' first-base problem. What sort of package are the Pirates likely to ask for in a hypothetical Nady trade?
(Jessica from NYC)
I could see Aaron Heilman and a decent hitting prospect getting it done. However, that would also mean the Mets would need to find another set-up guy. (John Perrotto)
2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)I was wondering what you thought about the Pirates sending Steve Pearce to the minors. Good move (increase development) or bad move (should be playing now)? Just FYI, this question is coming from where Napoleon's battle of Austerlitz (battle of the 3 emperors) took place. Anyways, thanks.
(Czechjustin from Brno, Czech Republic)
How interesting, since I just finished up reading Goetz's thoughts on how to best estimate the size of the Allied army at Austerlitz, and have Kagan's book, "Napoleon and the End of the Old Order," to look forward to.

Equally interesting (and disappointing, if you were with the two losing emperors) is the decision to demote Pearce, because it's more than a little frustrating. Sure, he's going to be a bit rough in right, but the agenda right now should be about getting LaRoche into the uni of a team that's still short a first baseman (paging the Yankees), and just playing Pearce wherever you have to play him in the meantime. Getting worked up about preserving Xavier Nady's playing time should not be a key consideration for the Pirates. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-02-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who has the stronger arm? Me or Juan Pierre? (Note: I "probably" lead my slow pitch softball league in outfield assists last year, although most of the base runners have had hip replacements recently.)
(Clay from St. Louis, MO)
Well, if your league is anything like the one I played in last year, getting an assist is actually an accomplishment since we're too old to try to stretch anything or for that matter want to even consider sliding. So I'd have to say yes, your arm is probably competitive.

For 2007 Pierre ranked dead last among centerfielders at -7.3 with a rate of -6.0. Grady Sizemore is second to last at -4.6 with David DeJesus (-4.5) not far behind. In 2006 Pierre was -1.8 and in 2005 -1.6. From 2005-2007 he finished second to last at -10.7 ahead of only Johnny Damon (-11.2). He wasn't nearly as bad as far as rate was concerned because of his greater playing time (-3.0 per 550 opportunities). From a rate perspective Brady Clark did the worst among centerfielders who received much playing time (256 adjusted games in those three years) at -5.3 runs per 550 opportunities.

Who was the worst in 2005-2007 you might ask (ok, you didn't but play along)? Shawn Green was -16.0 and Shannon Stewart was -11.8 before we get to Damon and Pierre. Jason Bay (-10.5) and Xavier Nady (-10.4) were no great shakes either. (Dan Fox)
