|---|---|---|
| 2012-01-26 13:00:00 | If Marisnick can stay in center, can he become what Rocco Baldelli should have been? (Mike from Utica, NY) | Not bad. Some people think he can stick and some think he slides to RF. He's certainly a legit five-tool talent. (Jason Parks) |
| 2010-02-09 13:00:00 | Are there any free agents left unsigned who could be useful to contending teams? (garethbluejays1 from Newcastle, UK) | I realize it's a well-kept secret that Johnny Damon is still looking for work. Beyond him, Russell Branyan, Rocco Baldelli, Joe Beimel, Carlos Delgado, Jermaine Dye, Pedro Martinez, Chan Ho Park, John Smoltz, Gary Sheffield and Jarrod Washburn all strike me as players who could help somebody win. Not necessarily by getting 500 PA worth of playing time, mind you, and maybe not getting enough playing time to satisfy their own estimations of their talent. Park can pitch out of my bullpen, but if he wants to start, fuggedaboutit. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2010-01-19 15:30:00 | How much do you think Xavier Nady can possibly command? And also, don't you think a couple of mil for a guy they gave up "prospects" for would make sense for the Yanks? (Sal C from Brooklyn) | You put "prospects" in quotes correctly. As much as I hate to say it, Nady wouldn't be a bad signing if the Yankees are going to restrict him to platoon work most of the time. That said, I'd rather have someone like Rocco Baldelli, who you can at least run out to center for Granderson now and again. Nady doesn't give you that kind of versatility. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2009-09-17 14:00:00 | Granted he's amazingly raw, but is there a non-Rocco Baldelli comp for Ryan Westmoreland? I feel like he gets it based on the "athletic guy from RI" the same way that any short white WR is compared to Wes Welker... (Jay from NY) | You are TOTALLY right, it's one of those cheap comps, like the Dominic Brown/Daryl Strawberry one. I don't have an obvious comp off the top of my head, but I have to tell you that the reports from scouts in the New York Penn League where OUT OF THIS WORLD. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2009-06-15 13:00:00 | Is there such thing as "injury prone"? (Carl from Michigan) | Yeah, there probably is. It's just ill-defined and a tag we shouldn't just throw out. Rocco Baldelli is injury-prone, but there's a pretty good reason for it. (Will Carroll) |
| 2009-01-07 13:00:00 | The information on Rocco Baldelli's supposed new diagnosis has been vague. What's your take on it and how will it impact his playing time? What do expect his peak performance to be? (Scott from Detroit) | I know what you know on it. Just have to hope for the best for him on a personal level and on a baseball one, that he gets a chance to show what all those scouts saw and we've only had glimpses of. (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-12-15 13:00:00 | Do you have any reservations about Joba's ability to stick as a starter? About Hughes ability to stay healthy? (Rob from Brighton) | I think Joba Chamberlain will be a solid starter, but I'm not sure about being a #1. Since they signed Sabathia, he doesn't have to be. 2? 3? Not sure, but they've handled him well. Hughes - well, he hasn't stayed healthy yet, so I don't have any reason to think that will change. It could, since he's young, and he's been good when healthy so you have to keep hoping. Hughes is the guy I usually cite, along with Rocco Baldelli and J.D. Drew, when I say that genetics will be the next revolution in baseball. (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-12-11 14:00:00 | The Reds are reportedly talking to Rocco Baldelli's agent. Is he capable of playing left every day or will he have to platoon?
(Brandon from Charleston) | Because of his condition, I think it's going to be impossible for Baldelli to play regularly anymore, which is a shame. However, I think he would make someone a great fourth outfielder or a short-side platoon guy. (John Perrotto) |
| 2008-09-09 13:30:00 | Albert's best season? The dude is hitting like Ted Williams. (Steve from St. Louis) | With a messed-up UCL. What an incredible story. Nothing against Rocco Baldelli, who is fighting a terrible illness, but I'm more impressed by Pujols, who's playing at a high level despite a very, very bad injury. I feel like Pujols isn't getting enough credit for that, relative to Baldelli. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-08-27 13:00:00 | Wikipedia's list of position players who have had Tommy John surgery: Rocco Baldelli, Joe Borchard, Shin-Soo Choo, Chris Denorfia, Rusty Greer, Luis Gonzalez, Matt Holliday, Norris Hopper, Cezar Izturis, Kelly Johnson, Xavier Nady, and Vance Wilson. Also, Jose Canseco could be included but doesn't really count since he blew out his arm while pitching. (Gump from nyc) | Jimmy Wales is a great guy, but .... man, that's a really incomplete list. (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-06-17 15:00:00 | What is a Rays fan to do, considering the report regarding Griffey Jr.? We didn't go along with the signing of Barry Bonds, so why would we trade prospects for a player that we'd be on the hook for 16 MIL and is more injury-prone than Rocco Baldelli? Isn't Gabe Gross decent enough platooned with Gomes to basically match his stats? (jlarsen from DRays Bay) | I wouldn't lose too much sleep over the Griffey rumors. The new Rays regime is a smart one, and they're likely to judge Griffey by his relatively minimal current value rather than his impressive accomplishments, and thus unlikely to give up much in the way of value, particularly given the hefty price tag of his contract. Gabe Gross is a thoroughly capable roleplayer, and so long as the team is doing well, they can bide their time and hope Rocco Baldelli gets healthy enough to contribute as well. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2008-03-19 13:00:00 | Will,
Do you think Rocco Baldelli will ever play another game in the MLB? (David from San Francisco, CA) | David, I don't know doesn't begin to tell you how much I don't know about this. I'm not going to guess, but I will point you to today's BPR, where I discuss mitochondrial disease with the CEO of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation. Even he'll admit that he doesn't know. We just have to wish Rocco the best and apologize that we ever questioned his heart.
Joe Sheehan often talks about being able to back up all his work with facts and never trying to establish character through performance. I think this situation might end up being the example of that. For years, I've questioned Baldelli's ability to stay healthy, which said nothing about his work ethic or character, something many questioned. (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-01-14 13:00:00 | Hi Will, just wondered if you had any news on Rocco Baldelli? I know he was getting tests done over the winter but I haven't heard much since. Thanks (mattseward from Cardiff, UK) | No news. He's working out, but if you keep up with the Rays, you get the sense that there's a lot of hope but not a lot of knowledge right now. Baldelli is key to the lineup right now since he'd be a far better fit in RF if he can play out there and stay healthy, which would have Gomes at DH. The "Crazy Bitch" (seriously, that's Gomes' theme song) is not much defensively.
Also, having Baldelli in the field at least part time would add some flexibility to the roster. (Will Carroll) |

| 2010-10-06 10:00:00 | 2010 Playoffs Day One | carligula (Oakland): Rocco Baldelli? Really? I suppose he's a guy you can root for, but... the Rays don't have anyone else to DH? This also confused me. The guy had under 30 PAs this season. How can a 95+ win team not have a better option than that? (Eric Seidman) |

I'm about to toss up a post on Unfiltered on the six rosters in play today, but yeah, this is a surprise. I'm glad to see Dan Johnson make the cut, but the Rays certainly did some interesting things. | 2009-10-28 17:00:00 | 2009 WS Game One | Utley was always a very good prospect, but never that crazy elite. He was the 15th overall pick in 2000, and that was one of the worst first rounds . . . ever. Of the 14 taken ahead of Utley, only seven even got to the big leagues, and only Adrian Gonzalez and Rocco Baldelli (breifly) were any good. When he was at Triple-A, he was seen as a very good offense-first 2B who could hit .280 with 15-20 bombs a year. He just never showed this big power in the minors, and he wasn't nearly as patient a hitter, either. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-10-27 16:30:00 | World Series Game Five | tercet (Toronto ) wonders, "What do you guys think of Tampa's RF mess? Do you like how Maddon's changed RF every game or should he stick to one? Id stick Rocco Baldelli in RF most of the games if I was the manager." I would have liked to have seen some sort of memory of how much Eric Hinske mattered to this team over the course of the season. Gross really didn't perform all that well, and he really seems to be the ultimate compromise solution in light of Hinske's lead-footedness and the persistent durability concerns with the likes of Floyd and Baldelli. | 2008-10-27 16:30:00 | World Series Game Five | It was low-hanging fruit. And Oates was really good on the second Handsome Boy Modeling Agency album. I just mean that Daryl Hall might be the best blue-eyed soul singer of all time. What no one is commenting on is that the Rays appear to be on the cusp of a run of playoff appearances. This team is young, talented, and there for the long term. They might lose Rocco Baldelli, but everyone else is back. Everyone. The minor leagues are loaded to boot, so even if the Rays lose, I think we'll be seeing a lot of them in future Octobers. (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-10-22 16:30:00 | World Series Game One | "Rocco Baldelli is apparently a late scratch, with Ben Zobrist in the lineup. "*PLUG* Zobrist is scheduled to be on BPR tomorrow." So you Kerriganed Baldelli to get Zobrist into the lineup? Will takes BPR verrrry seriously, people. (Derek Jacques) |
