2002 Frank Thomas didn't do much last season, but he sure ruined Woodard's year. The Big Hurt roped a line drive off Woodard's elbow, sending him to the disabled list right at the point where he was in position to reestablish himself. He's still capable of being a #4 starter, but he needs the support of a good defense and a bullpen that can cover his inability to go deep into games. He's a free agent, and a steal waiting to happen.
2001 Getting Steve Woodard was the saving grace of the Brewers’ trade. New managers have a way of coming to snap judgments, and Davey Lopes’s was that Woodard is useless. Given the lousy alternatives the Brewers had, let’s just call that decision premature. Woodard has outstanding command and fools people with a great change-up and good breaking stuff. He owns the only Indians’ win against Pedro Martinez in ten games. He may be a six-inning guy, but he’ll give the Tribe 30 starts and a league-average ERA. They need that a lot more than they need to haul Doc Gooden back.
2000 While he was a solid starter, he was the victim of all sorts of bad luck. Knee surgery the previous winter led to a staph infection that left him 30 pounds lighter. As mentioned in the essay, he was having a great season up until breaking his left wrist in a collision at home plate against the Marlins. He changes speeds on his slider well and has a killer change-up, but nobody's going to coin the term "crafty right-hander" anytime soon. He'll have a better season in 2000.
1999 Woodard’s a finesse pitcher, but one who nevertheless racks up plenty of strikeouts by setting up a killer changeup that can embarass the best of them. There was no sign of the back woes that slowed him down in ‘97, but the Brewers are concerned about his conditioning. We’ve been plugging him for awhile, and we aren’t stopping now.
1998 Named the top starting pitcher in the Texas League, and the guy who we noted last year was probably the organization’s best pitching prospect. He has total control of his slurve, fastball and change, and mixes speeds on everything. He generates a huge number of fly balls while keeping the ball in the yard. Woodard should fall somewhere around Brad Radke and John Wasdin, which isn’t bad.
1997 Worked pretty hard, but a very good prospect. He’ll anchor the El Paso rotation this year, and I expect him to tear the league a new Reinsdorf. Mechanics are grade A excellent. This gentleman can pitch.
