2005 The Mets have a handful of players who are underqualified for the extra outfielder job. Esix Snead and Jeff Duncan and now Ron Calloway are all in the organization, but Williams is the only one old enough to be a dad to the Mets' rookie-ball prospects. It's long past due for Ice to be put on ice.
2002 Well, that worked out about as well as could be expected. Someone will give Williams a crack at a fifth-outfielder job during spring training, and there might be worse options, depending on his price. Maybe the Dodgers could sign him and have the dream outfield of Williams, Marquis Grissom, and Tom Goodwin. Mmmm...outs.
2001 Small fish, big pond? Big fish, small pond? Last winter, Gerald Williams had to make a decision that many of us have to make in our lives, and he chose the latter. He gained a starting job and made some more money but after Mothers' Day didn't get to play in a single important game. He's overmatched as a regular, an asset as a fourth outfielder, and unwelcome in the Martinez household.
2000 Like Simon and Perez, Williams is a good backup who got too much playing time due to the Braves’ injuries. Hitting him leadoff just exacerbated the Braves’ OBP problems at the top of the lineup, particularly against right-handed pitching. He’s one of the better fourth outfielders in the game. The Devil Rays signed him as a free agent. Whether he’ll be the everyday center fielder or platoon with Randy Winn or Quinton McCracken is unclear.
1999 Had a fabulous season as a part-timer, playing all over the outfield and hitting .363 with an extra-base hit every 6 at-bats against left-handers. It would be an upset if his encore performance was as good, and signing Brian Jordan leaves only one left-handed outfielder in the starting lineup. Williams brings more offense and better defense to the table than Bautista does, so his job security shouldn’t be threatened.
1998 “Ice” got his day in the sun, and melted. He can hurt a lefty, and he’s an exceptional defensive player. But he’s always been an impatient hitter and he isn’t going to stop. Best suited for a part-time role, just as the Yankees were using him.
1997 Spare part who can play a few roles decently: pinch runner, pinch hitter, defensive sub…. He’ll be fighting for a job the rest of his career. Of course, if Dave Gallagher can find work, Gerald’s not much different, so he should be able to find something.
1996  Good spare part to have. Can help a team as a defensive sub or a PH, and has good speed. Not a great basestealer, though.
