2005 When he wasn't hurt, he was actually somewhat effective. That's a nice enough thing to say about most players, but when you spend the first half of the season sidelined with shoulder soreness, it doesn't add up to much in the end. The Sox are finally out from under Mendoza's unfortunate contract, though with that "former Yankee" sheen and "World Champion" label, Mendoza he'll get opportunities to prove he's healthy somewhere in '05.
2003 Although heís been an asset in the past, his value has always been overstated by his being in pinstripes. Bought by the Red Sox as a gesture of that typically Beantown zesty blend of spite and envy. Mendoza hardly evens the score as far as the Yankees having Clemens and the Red Sox having...well, money they got to spend on guys like Troy OíLeary, plus the benefit of the exciting careers of compensation draft picks Mark Fischer and Aaron Capista. Once upon a time, there was this one friend who always argued that things even out in the end, but believe me, some things donít.
2002 Mendoza is an outstanding pitcher who keeps the ball down, can take the mound for four innings if you need him to, or pitch on short rest for a few days. He's a lot like Ivan Rodriguez or Pedro Martinez in that he's structurally very important to the club, providing flexibility and durability to the pitching staff, which allows Joe Torre to make moves and adapt as needs arise.
2001 What started out as shoulder tendinitis was later diagnosed as a torn labrum, repaired by arthroscopic surgery in September. With the way the Yankees' pitching staff is structured, Ramiro Mendoza, if healthy, will probably split setup duties with Mike Stanton. Mendoza is more valuable to the team in the sixth and seventh innings, but there are no other setup-man candidates in camp.
2000 Mendoza continues to be more effective as a reliever despite having the repertoire of a starter. Heís such an extreme groundball pitcher that he should be successful in any role. In this organization, he is unlikely to get the chance to start regularly, but will be quite valuable in the swingman role until heís traded or leaves on his own. He does have a fairly big platoon split, about 100 points of OPS worse against left-handed hitters over his career.
1999 A big part of the championship staff, moving between the rotation and bullpen as needed and pitching in a variety of relief roles. Regular readers know how high we've been on him, and that hasn't changed, even with the dip in strikeout rate. Gets lots of groundballs and skewers the running game. It would be nice to see him get a more glamaorous role.
1998 Rumored to be a Mariner, in exchange for Randy Johnson, by the time you read this. Since 1998 is the last year Johnson is a good bet to be better than Mendoza, thatís a bad idea. He has great movement that gets groundballs and enough on the fastball to get Ks. Hasnít been overworked to this point, so his health isnít a concern. His slight frame, and a big split in his record after 30 pitches, is. Heís going to be a very good #2 starter for a number of years.
1997 I love this kid. Mendoza was called up when the Yanks were desperate and showed he wasnít ready. Ignore it. He throws strikes and groundballs, has movement and knows what heís doing. When he finally gets a job, heís going to get hammered while he learns what works on major league hitters. When he does, he could be pre-injury Bill Swift for five years. Get him.
1996  Tall, skinny right hander who looks dominating at times, and has good command of the strike zone. Everything about him looks pretty good to me. If he spends the entire year in Columbus, he'll bump up that K rate a bit, and will make a good case for jumping into the 1997 Yankee rotation. The Yankees don't have a great track record in terms of giving their prospects adequate time or training, though. In a pinch, he might be called up midseason and worked as a #5 starter. He might well be ready by then.
