2009 Since briefly showing up with the Yankees, Brandon Knight has pitched for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, the Nippon Ham Fighters, Double-A Altoona, and the Somerset Patriots of the independent Atlantic League; on the verge of going into coaching, he was picked up by the Mets in May, and his perseverance not only led to his first major league victory but a bronze medal in Beijing.
2003 It was a bit baffling why the Yankees didnít keep Knight around as a long reliever in 2002. Why have him on the 40-man or ship him off to his third year in Ohio if he canít beat out Jay Tessmer for the Opening Day roster? Knight throws four pitches for strikes but isnít overpowering; his future is as an 11th pitcher and spot starter. Sometimes those guys grow up to be Cory Lidle, but Knight will be pitching in Japan in 2003 after his contract was sold to the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks.
2002 Knight struck out better than a guy per inning in Columbus, and he has about 18 months to avoid the dreaded "Quadruple-A" label. He can help a major-league club, either as a back-of-the-rotation starter or perhaps as a setup guy out of the pen. Knight needs to have a great outing in front of a decision maker, something he didn't do in 2001, when he faced the Orioles in three of his four MLB appearances and somehow found a way to allow ten runs in ten innings. That's not the way to make a good impression.
2001 Brandon Knight led all Triple-A pitchers in innings last year. That calls to mind Bull Durham and the mixed emotions with which Crash Davis approached the minor-league home-run record. Sure, it's your name on top of a list, but what it really means is you spent a lot of years never reaching your real goal. The Yankees didn't want him in New York. He needs another expansion.
2000 A former top prospect in the Texas system, Knight bounced back a bit from his disastrous 1998, but not enough to catch up with some of his peers (Davis, Lee, Glynn, and Kolb). He'll probably get one more chance in Oklahoma to show major-league readiness. The improved control he exhibited last year should help his chances.
1999 Prior to 1998, Knight was clearly the most highly regarded Ranger pitching prospect. He hit a big snag last year, was a complete bust at AAA, and he even took a step backward at AA. He is still young and still has a rising K rate. I expect him to conquer AA next year and continue his rise through the system.
1998 The Rangers are said to be high on him, heís very young, and his strikeout rate keeps getting better. A full season at Triple-A in the next couple of seasons will help determine if Texas has a star on its hands.
