2003 You wonít find a more controversial prospect in the game, not even Prince Fielder. The question is, can Henson learn how to play baseball? Nobody really knows. In four seasons, he hasnít really made any progress as a hitter, he has terrible problems getting the bat around, and heís an awful third baseman. In his favor, heís still very young, and should you hold it against him that he was raw to be up in Triple-A considering his game experience? At this point, the question isnít whether or not heíll grow into being a superstar, but whether or not heíll grow into being a big league regular. Heís better than Josh Booty, but whether he becomes anything more than that is going to depend on his learning curve as a hitter, and so far, he hasnít shown that he has one.
2002 He's considered a top prospect based almost entirely on scouting reports and probably partly because he was a difficult sign, with a football career as an option. Henson is considered the heir apparent to Brosius at third base and is expected to develop significant power. Defensively, he's raw at best, but he has the quickness to improve. He hit .316/.412/.581 in the Arizona Fall League and was a distant second on the depth chart at third base behind the obscenely talented Hank Blalock.
2001 Drew Henson can be a top-tier third baseman, but he needs at-bats to develop, and he's not getting them. With at least another season of college football ahead of him, it's unlikely that he'll play baseball full-time until 2002 at the absolute earliest. He's only a mid-level baseball prospect as long as he's playing football half the year. The Reds can help themselves by trading him back to the Yankees.
2000 Henson spent most of the year unable to win the starting job, hampered by a decision-maker unwilling to recognize his superior talent--not with Tampa but with the Michigan Wolverines, where Lloyd Carr insisted on alternating him at quarterback with Tom Brady. As a baseball player, you canít take Henson seriously on just two months a year, which is a shame. If he dropped football tomorrow, heíd be about the 15th-best prospect in the game.
