BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2005 We often talk about the perils of empty batting averages. Sanchez hit .322, but almost never draws a walk, almost never hits for power, runs his team out of rallies on the basepaths, plays a middling center field, and missed much of the season with a hamstring injury. He hits .322 and he's a reasonable if overrated player; he hits .279, as PECOTA thinks he's going to do, and he's a Big Problem. The Tigers, to their credit, threatened to non-tender him before agreeing to a cheap, one-year deal. Curtis Granderson could take over sooner than anyone thinks, perhaps even by Opening Day.
2003 Alex Sanchez is a good baseball player. He can hit for average, play good defense, and run. That being said, if your MLB club is running him to the outfield every day, youíre in deep trouble. Sanchez just doesnít have the power to be a productive major league regular. His lack of plate discipline means he needs to hit .320 to have a reasonable on-base percentage, and heís not going to hit .320 very often. Looking at the 25th man on your roster and seeing Alex Sanchez is a good thing. Looking at your second outfielder and seeing Alex Sanchez should immediately cause hives.
2002 A worse player than his numbers show, Sanchez is one of those speed guys with very little idea about what heís doing in any phase of the game. He gets caught flat-footed in the outfield, especially coming in on line drives, and then he forgets which base to throw to. He can slap a single and he can run, so heís only useful as the last man on the bench on a team with a good center fielder and a couple of better pinch hitters.
2001 The speedy slap hitter, who was the Devil Rays' best position-player prospect for a time, rebounded from a lousy 1999 to reach Triple-A. Alex Sanchez is a fifth outfielder and pinch runner, comparable to the early versions of Luis Polonia but with better defense. He'll have a career off more than a few benches.
2000 In keeping with their blossoming tradition of fast, hacking center fielders, Tampa Bay views him as their leadoff man of the future. Sanchez lost nearly 80 points off his batting average in the move to Double-A and has no plate discpline, leading to an abysmal .290 on-base percentage. Nevertheless, he was promoted to Durham for the playoffs, indicating the Rays still think highly of him. He'll start the season in Triple-A, and any hint of success could land him in the majors.
1998 Like Arrojo, Sanchez is a highly-touted Cuban defector. He has the skills that are popular in this organization: outstanding glovework, a great arm and blazing speed (he stole 92 bases in 1997). Heís still very young and very raw, but he isnít totally undisciplined at the plate for his age and should he fill out as he gets older. Could have a career.
