| 2011-08-26 16:00:00 | With Carlos Guillen and Magglio Ordonez done, the Tigers have an extra $20M/year to play with in the offseason, I say go get Jose Reyes, put him at second, then you can run out an infield of C Alex Avila, 1B Miguel Cabrera, 2B Reyes, SS Jhonny Peralta, 3B Nick Castellanos. Sound like a plan? If not who should the Tigers go after with the $20m? (DetroitDale from Florida (eternal spring training)) | I would check with Dave Dombrowksi on that stuff -- he seems to have Tigers going pretty good these days (John Coppolella) |
| 2011-08-04 13:00:00 | Do you care to expand on your worries over the Tigers' future....weak farm? Iffy everyday lineup? The rotation is locked up for a long while. Thank you. (lemppi from Iowa) | Weak farm; Kevin had them 27th in the organizational rankings this spring. They'll have some financial flexibility after this season, and while Mike Ilich isn't afraid to spend, they absolutely have to avoid the entanglements that produced so much dead salary over the past few years. Carlos Guillen, Magglio Ordonez, Dontrelle Willis, Nate Robertson, Jeremy Bonderman - I can't think of a team that had so many contracts of $10 million per year blow up on them all at once. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2010-12-07 13:00:00 | Word from Gammons is the Mets would eat about $10 million of Beltran's last year to move him to Boston, or take $10 million of bad contracts in return, like maybe Daisuke. What do you think? (Colin Jaffe from New Jersey) | I just wrote about acquiring Magglio Ordonez or Josh Willingham for left field at Red Sox Beacon, but Beltran would be a fine fit as well. His defense is diminished, but he would be playing in left anyway, and it would open up a rotation spot for Boston to either (A) put Felix Doubront in or (B) acquire a starting pitcher to fill out their rotation. It also helps the Mets, as someone like Matsuzaka gives them starting pitcher depth at a good price--Dice-K makes $2M less than Oliver Perez, and is far, far superior--in a park and league where his stuff should play better than at Fenway. It would be win-win, if that's the case. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-11-23 13:00:00 | Magglio Ordonez was somehow a type A free agent (pretty amazing). The Tigers did not offer him arbitration. Please discuss. (WilliamWilde from Boston) | Maggs can still hit when available, but he's averaged only 120 games a year for the past three, is weak defensively, and has been grossly overpaid of late (7.2 WARP for $51 million for 2008-2010). Why would you want that back unless it's for much, much cheaper? (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2010-11-16 13:00:00 | If you had to guess now, who do you think becomes the FA bargain of the offseason? My guess was Kuroda, but his deal was quick and relatively expensive. Dunn the other year was a great example of what I mean.....a good player sitting there at a bargain price for anyone to take later in the offseason. (Will from Mactaquac) | I was with you on Kuroda. Maybe Magglio Ordonez, who hasn't seemed to generate a buzz commensurate with his offensive abilities. Javier Vazquez might make an NL team happy. The market for late-inning relievers is deep enough that someone like J.J. Putz or Grant Balfour could end up signing a below-market deal. (Ben Lindbergh) |
| 2010-08-04 13:00:00 | What is your opinion of Dave Dombrowski? His deal is up after '11. Do GM's go into seasons as a lame duck often or is an extension looming? Thanks. (lemppi from Ankeny, IA) | It's pretty hard to denigrate the job Dombrowski has done. He walked into a real disaster zone and got the club to the World Series. We just ticked off some of the mistakes that Omar Minaya has made, but how many of those contracts has Dombrowski handed out? The Magglio Ordonez deal gets criticized, but how bad has Ordonez been? Bonderman imploded, but he was signed coming off a good year at 23. The Carlos Guillen deal was questionable at the time (2007) and you would have liked to see them being more aggressive in searching for a catcher this year. Overall, though, I think he'll be back if he wants to be. The only question is, if, as Sparky Anderson suggested about certain managerial firings, "They just get sick of seeing you." We don't know about those relationships, obviously. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2009-09-14 16:30:00 | Can you assess the impact of Detroit's local economy on the Tigers? They carry a large payroll and they let Magglio Ordonez' $18M deal for 2010 vest to the tune of an extra $15M ($3M buy out no matter what). They also added Washburn and Huff while paying over-slot to 4 picks at least. The only thing I can see is that they did lay low during the last off-season's Free Agent market. Thanks. (lemppi from Ankeny, IA) | Well, sunk costs are sunk. Detroit's current payroll shouldn't factor into whether they spend money on free agents. That should be a question of whether they can add more revenue by adding a player than it will cost to outbid his other suitors.
The effect of their economy is not immediate. It should come down to whether a win becomes more valuable than before, rather than what their total revenue will do. If the market is such that people refuse to see a losing ballclub, but will go out and see a winning ballclub almost as much as in good economic times, then the Tigers should spend more money. I'd be curious about this topic in general. (Matt Swartz) |
| 2009-08-26 13:00:00 | Approximately how much revenue is each round of the playoffs worth to each club? Is a first round playoff series worth the cost of letting Magglio Ordonez' contract vest for next season to the tune $15M? They could have cut him for the $3M buyout but it appears he'll make his plate appearances now barring injury. (even though I don't think Magglio is driving force behind a playoff berth) Thank you. (lemppi from Ankeny, IA) | I would have cut him midseason. Making the playoffs -- and therefore having a chance at the WS -- can bring in a lot more than $15m. But it's not like cutting Magglio eliminates that possibility -- they could have found somewhat similar production from July-September from someone else. (Shawn Hoffman) |
| 2009-07-09 13:00:00 | What do you do with Magglio Ordonez? Word on the street is that he's going to be the short end of a platoon in RF. (don from lansing, MI) | I'd do exactly that, put him on the short end of a platoon. The season has reached the point where you can't worry about players' feelings, their performance bonuses or the amount of playing time that triggers option years. Scott Boras can complain all he wants but Jim Leyland has an obligation to put his best team on the field in an attempt to win his division. Right now, that doesn't include Ordonez. (John Perrotto) |
| 2009-05-21 14:00:00 | At roughly 40 games in, could you handicap the AL Central? Can the Tigers still go the distance w/o much from Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen, and Placido Polanco? (lemppi from Ankeny, IA) | The best single unit is the Tigers' rotation, which has been very good. I don't think Dontrelle Willis is the solution in the #5 slot--I'd rather see Bonderman replace him than Galarraga--but Verlander/Jackson (11 walks!)/Porcello is a great way to start. They need some bullpen help and maybe a lefty bat, although Larish could fill that role. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-01-25 13:30:00 | Inge? I blame him. Look, when you don't hit, you can't expect all that playing time. Inge was able to break in because he came up at a historically bad time for the Tigers, and now he'll draw a pension because of it. If he doesn't want to play a lesser (albeit still important) role for the team that forked over $24 million to a career .241 hitter, you better believe I blame him.
How many runs do you see the Tigers scoring this year? (Dan from Oakland, CA) | Another party heard from :)
Oh, I agree that his production is not commensurate with his salary but I was speaking more to the natural drive to play. They score 887 runs last season and although Magglio Ordonez will certainly regress to the mean, the addition of Cabrera and Renteria should offset the drop. I'm going to say 903... (Dan Fox) |
| 2008-01-25 13:30:00 | Dan,
I appreciate your work, thanks for the time to chat. You mentioned Magglio Ordonez as someone who should regress to the mean in '08. What players in particular do you see taking their game to a higher level in 2008? (tim foli from parts unknown) | Ok, gotta rap this up and do some real work...
The answer to your question is the topic of a column in the very near future that will take the simple projection framework I developed for the booms and busts column and apply it going forward to 2008 (and beyond?). And then we'll see who makes the list. (Dan Fox) |
| 2008-01-10 13:00:00 | How good can you see Colby Rasmus becoming? Is he Sizemore good or better? (Mike from Utica,NY) | That's a pretty good comp. There could be more power, although in fairness, I expected more power from Sizemore.
He also could grow out of center end up like...hmmm...peak Magglio Ordonez? (Joe Sheehan) |

| 2008-09-29 10:30:00 | Tigers/White Sox Play-In Game | lemppi asks: "Your mission if you choose to accept it: Dave Dombrowski hires you to find the best possible trade for Magglio Ordonez. Do you tell him he's nuts to trade Maggs? If not, what clubs do you talk to first and what would you expect to receive? Thanks." I'd ask if he's trying to win in '09. If he is, I hold onto Ordonez. I don't think you can get value for him. If he's building, I find out how much of the contract Ilitch is willing to swallow and start dialing Brian Sabean's number." (Will Carroll) |
