2014-05-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)So in other words sell high on Dee Gordon?
(Scott from AZ)
I would. Guerrero has a .305/.379/.576 in AAA, though its Albuquerque - where Miguel Olivo has an 1100 OPS. (Doug Thorburn)
2014-05-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Better nickname: Hanniguel Olicter, Miguennibal Lectivo, or some other combination of Miguel Olivo and Hannibal Lecter?
(John from Cincinnati)
Love the first one, LOL (Paul Sporer)
2014-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Alfaro has a low threshold to clear given all of those talents you mentioned and the anemic hitting at catching. How would you respond to the Miguel Olivo comp due to the lack of hit tool?
(adragone from NJ)
Doesn't make any sense to me. He has a hit tool. Its not as loud as his other tools, but that comp sounds like its based on his A ball stats and not the scouting reports or any eyewitness observation. Alfaro has incredible bat speed and his balance has improved. Will he be a .300 hitter? No. But Miguel Olivo comp? Jesus that's rough. (Jason Parks)
2012-12-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would you rather a) see Tim Raines and Miguel Olivo go into the Hall of Fame together or b) see neither of them ever go in?
(Mike Z from Seattle)
Yes. Thank you. Putting it this way makes me feel not as bad for choosing to exclude in the previous iteration of this question. There have to be standards! (Sam Miller)
2011-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)The ESPN Player Rater weighs the contribution of each player's statistical output as the percentage of that of the entire MLB player pool. Do you think this in effect gives too much weight to stolen bases? For instance, Michael Bourn ranks 16th overall. Or are stolen bases truly that valuable?
(Andrew from Las Vegas)
While I've never actually checked the numbers, I would guess that it does. It would be much better if they used a theoretical player pool for the league depth. Since steals are more scarce than, say, home runs, my guess is that the vast majority of players who contribute steals get owned in a large percentage of leagues. While a guy like Nyjer Morgan might be owned in a lot of leagues, a guy like Miguel Olivo or Raul Ibanez whose primary contribution is home runs might not be. This means that the MLB player pool is more representative of the fantasy player pool for SB than it is for HR. The ESPN Rater would be acting as if more HRs are in play than there actually are, reducing their value and raising value of SB correspondingly. (Derek Carty)
2011-09-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)With D'Arnaud's ascension this year, do you see him being a better player than Arencibia, and on what kind of timeline? How should the Jays manage these two assets?
(dtwhite from Toronto)
My response here is similar to mine on Trumbo, which is that as long as we can't squeeze a .300 OBP out of the guy, he's more a problem than a solution. I look at Arencibia and see Miguel Olivo or Rod Barajas. (Steven Goldman)
2010-11-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do the Red Sox do at catcher with Victor Martinez headed to Detroit?
(Frank from Dover)
If it's me, I'm signing Yorvit Torrealba or Miguel Olivo to a two-year deal and hoping Salty shows enough to merit playing time in front of them. Both of those free agents are at least average defensively while delivering adequacy in one of the two key offensive categories (OBP for Yorvit, SLG for Miggy). Neither made $3 million last year, so neither should be too expensive, though John Buck's contract may have blown up the market. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm not sure there's an answer to this or if it's even a question, but as a fantasy owner what Colorado is doing to Chris Iannetta is actually making me root for him to be dealt to Florida for Uggla even though I'm a Rockies fan. Will there be an end to this suffering??
(Rob from Alaska)
The answer is I have Miguel Olivo and don't want Iannetta to play, even if I know it's wrong of me to want the better player to be sitting. I agree with you though, I wish they would deal him somewhere if they aren't going to use him. (Marc Normandin)
2009-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)I thought you'd answer "Yankees backup C" :)
(Wade from TX)
That would have been a fun answer, but although I tend to bitch about carrying an automatic out on the bench, I'm not sure how high our expectations should really be. As I wrote in today's You Could Look It Up, I'm looking for something better than Kevin Cash/Corky Miller, but much more than that probably isn't too realistic... John Flaherty hit .259/.291/.461 from 2003-2004, which is basically Miguel Olivo, obviously not great, but also not horrible given the alternatives. He had some big hits, too... (Steven Goldman)
2008-08-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)The FA list form mlbtraderumors: Catchers Rod Barajas (33) - $2.5MM club option for '09 with a $0.5MM buyout Michael Barrett (32) Henry Blanco (37) - $3MM mutual option for '09 with a $0.3MM buyout Johnny Estrada (33) Toby Hall (33) - $2.25MM club option for '09 with a $0.15MM buyout Jason LaRue (35) Paul Lo Duca (37) Miguel Olivo (30) - $2.7MM club option for '09 with a $0.1MM buyout Mike Redmond (38) - $0.95MM club option for '09 with a $0.1MM buyout Ivan Rodriguez (37) David Ross (32) Jason Varitek (37) Gregg Zaun (38)
(Josh from MA)
That's um...ugly. And depressing, if you're a Sox fan, or a fan of anyone else without a quality catcher. (Marc Normandin)

2009-10-15 17:00:002009 NLCS Game One (Phillies/Dodgers)http://www.drivelinemechanics.com/2009/10/13/1082419/2009-catcher-defense-filling-in had an interesting look at catcher defense. The part that stood out to me was the blocking balls section. Ruiz was +5.6 runs in that department, which was the best, I think. Martin was -5.1, which was the worst this side of Miguel Olivo. Posada was at -3.8. (Jay Jaffe)
