2009 You may know Matt Ginter as the journeyman who briefly filled in the gaping rotation hole immediately after Sabathia's departure.
2005 Acquired in the spring for Timo Perez, the Mets put Ginter back into the rotation, a role he hadn't had since mid-2001. He pitched so well at Norfolk that they called him up to patch a hole in May. He fell apart soon afterwards, and his season eventually ended early due to bone chips in his ankle. With the rebuilt rotation, a lot of things will have to go wrong for him to get 14 major league starts again.
2004 Ginter spent virtually the entire season in Charlotte after having struggled mightily against left-handed hitters in 2002, a characteristic that makes him difficult to use in high-leverage situations. Unfortunately, there isn't much evidence that he's corrected his problems, as lefties hit .343 off him in Triple-A, vs. righties' .193 clip. Even in these days of bullpen specialization, there isn't much room for ROOGYs, and Ginter's future will remain very much in doubt until he learns how to handle southpaws.
2003 Ginter had a heavy workload early on (he pitched 17 innings in May after being called up on the 3rd) and it may have affected him down the stretch, as he was hit hard several times to put an end to what had been a good season. He’s got everything you look for from a setup man, and you should expect him to handily outperform that projection.
2002 With Bill Simas out for the year and Bobby Howry just looking like it, Ginter opened an opportunity for himself as Keith Foulke's setup man. He was moved to the pen just last summer, and his strikeout rate picked up. Ginter has a fastball/slider combination, with no real third pitch, so he's in the bullpen to stay. The Sox are going to have an excellent pen this year.
2001 After pitching for Mississippi State, Matt Ginter was part of the first-round bounty of ’99. The Sox saw that he needed a minor mechanical adjustment to improve his stuff. He now throws in the mid 90s with a slider in the high 80s, but he has yet to master a decent change-up. If he doesn’t pick one up, he may get moved to closer.
