BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2002 Itís hard to believe Suzuki was traded, waived, claimed, and released only a year after it looked like he was the Royalsí best starter. The Brewers released him after the season, and heís been re-signed by the Royals. He still hasnít mastered an off-speed pitch, which keeps him from succeeding as a starter, and his lack of command keeps him from being worth much in relief. Until he adds one or the other, heíll be a fringe fifth starter/mop-up man.
2001 The case for Brent Strom rides primarily on Mac Suzuki, who hadnít posted a successful season since he pitched for San Bernardino in 1993, then emerged as the Royalsí quasi-ace last year. Itís not coincidental that Suzukiís fastball was the best on the staff, but there was more than that to his success: Strom had Suzuki slow down his delivery in spring training; while base runners took advantage (27 of 28 on steal attempts), the consistency in his delivery made his splitter that much more believable. Suzuki had his rotator cuff cleaned up after the season. Heís probably not going to get better than he was in 2000 unless he develops a real off-speed pitch.
2000 By virtue of a strong September, Suzuki did just enough to tease the Royals into thinking he might be worth a rotation spot this April. This would be a mistake; Suzuki has yet to show that he can throw strikes consistently enough to succeed. Unlike Witasick, his stuff isnít good enough to get hitters out on a 2-1 count.
1999 Started pitching very well for
1998 Not a prospect, and unlikely to ever be a decent major leaguer. He could take a quantum leap forward, but there a hundred guys who could do the same thing. His novelty value provides a six-month buffer at best.
1997 Still a curiosity at this point. Heís missed the better part of the last three seasons with injuries, which may have been the best thing for his arm in the long run. Heís still only 22, and should eventually be a very good, if erratic, major league pitcher. The Mariners tried him in the rotation last year, but his future most likely lies in the bullpen.
