YearComment
2007 Koskie`s season ended in early July thanks to post-concussion syndrome. In late August, MLB.com reported that Koskie had, `been urged by physicians to limit his mental activity as much as possible.` One imagines Koskie spending eight to ten hours a day watching Gilligan`s Island episodes and reading lad magazines. The injury itself was no joke, as Koskie suffered from constant dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. As with Hardy`s ankle, Koskie`s concussion, the result of striking his head on the ground while diving for a pop-up, wasn`t something that he or the training staff could have prevented. If healthy, he`s a decent producer against right-handers.
2006 So, why pay $17 million over three years for an aging third baseman with a long injury history when you`re still a year or two away from contention, and have better, cheaper options in-house? Unable to attract a significant free agent in 2004, the Jays decided Koskie wasn`t a bad guy to settle on, and his Canadian roots didn`t hurt. So far, it`s been the sort of mid-market shopping mistake that teams really regret. Koskie`s not getting any younger or healthier, and while he should be closer to his established career levels in 2006, there`s just as good a chance that the words `albatross` and `sinkhole` are going to come up a lot when talking about him.
2005 Beyond signing him because he's Canadian—and they do like their own up there—Koskie's a solid citizen, and Toronto is hoping that his graying years are golden. He's relatively athletic, which encouraged PECOTA to see a lot of potential for bounceback, keeping last year's additional power while ratcheting his average back up. His propensity for injuries makes him a significant risk, though, such that $17 million may not end up all that well-spent.
2003 Koskie is one of those guys you love to watch, because although he’s not a masher with game-breaking power, he’s an unselfish hitter (as in, somebody who works counts and gets on base), he’s generally a smart baserunner, and he flashes good range at third. He’s athletic enough to age well, but that would be the exception, not the rule. Appropriately enough, Koskie’s under contract through 2004, or right up through the age where you should think twice about giving him big money.
2002 A very fine ballplayer. Koskie's an excellent defender who hits for moderate power, a good average, and draws walks. He's underappreciated in his current market. He takes a great angle on almost every ground ball, and he has the quickest release of any third baseman in baseball except possibly Troy Glaus. Koskie is a good bet to be a top-three third baseman for the next couple of years, along with Eric Chavez and Troy Glaus; after that, he'll likely be overtaken by Hank Blalock.
2001 It's the Twins' version of Mark Grace: put him at the top of the order and they could score some runs. Corey Koskie doesn’t have tremendous range, and he’ll never make people forget Scott Brosius coming in on bunts, but he can handle third base and does a good job starting the double play. Talk about moving him to first base is premature.
2000 Koskie was old for a rookie, and you can see he has old-players’ skills in that he slugs well and draws walks, so he may not have a long career. He is a good athlete who played more hockey and volleyball than baseball in Canada before college, so he could surprise people. He was platooned and played well, but he did have to endure a punitive benching for hammering Chuck Knoblauch with a takeout slide. Having Coomer and Gates around forced Koskie to stumble around in right field for a few games. He’ll spend most of 2000 at third base, but once Cuddyer is up, the Twins will make room for Koskie’s bat somewhere.
1999 Koskie will outperform that projection in less playing time, because it's likely that Tom Kelly will platoon him. His defense is just passable and he has shown a platoon split, so it's not a terrible idea. Koskie isn't as good a third-base prospect as Glaus or Chavez, but he's probably a safer bet for 1999, eh?
1998 Koskie had his best season in 1997, but he’s old for a prospect and the Twins infield is already crowded. If Walker moves to second base following a Knoblauch trade, Koskie could get a shot at third, but time is running out.
1997 Koskie has not shown the kind of pop the Twins were hoping to see, and his defense has also raised alarms. With the re-signing of Knoblauch and the shift of Todd Walker, Koskie’s future is as trade bait or minor league free agent.

2009-01-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will - how do you go about grading recovery potential from a concussion (or similar) injury? What separated Corey Koskie from Ryan Church? How does Aaron Hill look heading into 2009? Thanks
(rawagman from Toronto)
I don't. I'm no doctor and it's a mystery to them why these go the ways they do. There's so many unknowns here. Haven't heard anything on Hill. (Will Carroll)
