2003 Johnson is one of those guys whose intensity on the mound is hard to miss. He wigged out after not making the club in spring training, and drew a suspension for beaning William Ortega in the PCL. His violent delivery creates some concern and encourages some observers to think he’ll be better off in the pen, but the Twins still take him seriously as a starting pitcher. Although he struggled with command of his slider at times last summer, he gained better touch on his changeup. Between his flyball tendencies and a weak Edmonton outfield, it isn’t hard to believe he’ll do better once he gets up and has the benefit of pitching in front of the Twins’ defense as either a starter or reliever.
2002 He hasn't disappointed since the Twins drafted him in the first round two years ago. Johnson has very good stuff, and his command is coming around. He should have a shot at the rotation in the spring, depending on the disposition of Rick Reed, and he is probably the best of several pretty good prospects the Twins have to fill rotation spots in the next couple of years. Johnson is definitely the one most likely to be a Front of the Rotation Starter [tm].
2001 Adam Johnson was given a $2.5-million bonus after being the second pick overall in the 2000 draft, but he was considered a signability pick. He quickly made the point moot by blowing through the Florida State League, flashing a mid-90s fastball and a good, hard slider. Some want to make him a closer, which would be a waste, but starting or relieving, he’ll be in the majors by the end of the season. Johnson is considered cocky and starred at Cal State Fullerton. College players with attitudes seem to be the guys Kelly cuts down a peg.
