DateQuestionAnswer
2010-08-02 13:30:00 (link to chat)Since I believe the Nats will sign Adam Dunn, I am more interested in the other 2 trades Mike Rizzo made: 1. You didn't seem terribly impressed with the Wilson Ramos trade, although you didn't pan it. Has Ramos taken a big hit to his reputation this year? 2. Folks seem a lot more impressed with Cristian Guzman than we in DC were, although he is a good enough guy. I know the Nats didn't get much for him, but I was surprised they got even 2 AA pitchers. Why the sudden love folks have for Guzman?
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
I think Ramos took a hit because he's basically a batting average-dependent producer, but at his age, there's still some room for growth, and I guess I'm more depressed over what this meant for Flores' situation. It was a pretty decent flip, in that Ramos isn't going to be the next Wil Nieves, he could start and not be the worst regular catcher in baseball.

As for Guzman, LASIK may have helped his ability to hit singles more frequently, but it didn't seem to do him any favors in the field. He's an adequate middle infielder with no power, patience, or speed, so getting worked up over him is sort of silly. He's a decent veteran placeholder, but getting him is more of an insurance move for the Rangers than cause for jubilation. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-06-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)The way I see it, there's about 10 or more contenders that could use middle infield help. Cristian Guzman, for all his flaws, hits better than most current solutions in Boston, TB, Minn, Detroit, NYMets, Cinci and all but about 3 hitters on San Diego, to name a few teams. Do you think the Nats will finally be able to move him?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
The problem is that Guzman's making $8 million this year, so Washington's going to have to pick up a good chunk of the remaining bread in order to get anything of substance back for him, and even then, the fact that he's probably not going to be a Type A free agent and generate much in the way of compensation lowers the level of attraction for the team acquiring him as well. I do think there are potential fits out there - the Mets and Tigers, especially, and maybe the Bosox too now that Pedroia's down. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-01-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)It seems that Mike Rizzo has increased the credibility of the Nationals within baseball, but there are more moves to be made to increase the number of wins they will have. Should the Nats have Orlando Hudson, Adam Kennedy or Cristian Guzman at 2nd base? Which veteran pitcher should they sign? Would accomplishing both moves mean much for their record in 2010?
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
There is no doubt that Mike Rizzo is extremely well respected in the game and I have no doubts he has the Nats on the right course. Normally, I'd say go with the kids in their case but they need to establish some crediblity in their market now. THus, I'd suggest they sign Hudson and Doug Davis. (John Perrotto)
2009-09-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)I don't know if a hard slide knocked his LASIK repaired cornea out of whack, but Cristian Guzman has hit .259/.289/.365 since mid-May. Should the Nats move him to 2B or just move on? It seems with Desmond at SS, they could sign or find something better at 2B than Guzman. What are your thoughts?
(Charlie from Bethesda)
I don't think the Nats are in a position where they can afford to sign a frontline free agent middle infielder (say, Orlando Hudson) AND keep Guzman around, so i suspect they'll take the path of least resistance and keep him. Guzman's performed surprisingly well (.306/.336/.425) over the first three years of a deal that was nearly universally ridiculed at the time, and the $8 million he's got coming to him looks sort of reasonable for next year.

As to how he fits into the middle infield with Desmond, I don't know enough about the latter's fielding prowess to tell you which of them should be at short; Guzman's a slightly below-average fielder there according to UZR. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-02-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)Christian Guzman... is he really going to be as good as his projections say? Are his comps all late bloomers?
(krissbeth from watertown)
I just have a very real problem with taking Cristian Guzman all that seriously, but happily, Jim Bowden keeps him locked down with the Nats, essentially making the question academic (or one for the realm of fantasy). Snark aside, he's come back better than I expected as a hitter, but his comps (Schoendienst, Julio Franco, Michael Young, and Grudz) are cause for continuing optimism. (Christina Kahrl)

(strupp from Madison)
Mets, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Braves. I'm much less confident over here. The only teams I could not possibly see making the postseason are the Padres, Pirates and the Nationals, and even the Nats could be frisky if all the young hitters click and Cristian Guzman...well, I'm not going there. 2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)Big logjam in the middle infield for the Nats and it appears Trader Jim's having trouble finding a taker for Lopez. What do you think will happen?
(macman from DC)
I'm not sure "big logjam" is the term I'd use, but "corpse-choked gully" would be too cruel. We're talking Ronnie Belliard and Cristian Guzman, and I wouldn't want to bank on either. The real problem is that Lopez really isn't much of a shortstop, so any proposition of using him again as the swing middle infielder to cover for whichever starter breaks first runs up against that. Teams looking for a shortstop (like the Orioles) shouldn't put too much value on Lopez, and haven't.

I guess I don't see the depth, in case they deal Lopez. Pete Orr? Willie Harris? We're talking second base types who can't really play short either. Aaron Boone can't really play third. It makes for a potentially oddly disjointed bench. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Love your work on TA and the chats. My Nats question for this year: whither Felipe Lopez?
(Rinalro from DC)
Starting shortstop. I really don't think Cristian Guzman's back, or that he'll stay healthy. (Christina Kahrl)
