2003 Blowing out a knee in 2001 cost Canizaro any chance he might have had to hold onto the second base job. When he came back in 2002, he was still having knee problems, and since he canít really play anywhere but second, he doesnít have much value as a utility infielder. Signed as a NRI with the D-Rays, he might have a shot at Brent Abernathyís job.
2001 The good thing about entering the replacement-level second-baseman market is that your options are as plentiful and as interchangeable as a casting call for Baywatch. You donít want to get stuck with a high-maintenance type like Pamela Anderson or Todd Walker. They get too big for their thongs, wanting everything their way. When youíre the Twins, youíre better off with people who are just happy to be there. Thatís Jay Canizaro. Once Luis Rivas wins the job, Canizaro wonít stick around for long. Minor-league-veteran second basemen donít often make it in a utility role.
2000 He returned to the big club for the first time since 1996, picking up a few at-bats and hopefully impressing someone. Canizaro has a little pop in his bat and isnít the worst defensive second baseman around, so he might be a decent backup.
1999 Once upon a time, he was going to be the next Robby Thompson. Now he only deserves mention because some people remember once upon a time. He's going backwards, and wouldn't get 384 at-bats in the majors next season even if they had another expansion draft and added eight teams.
1997 A very disappointing 1996 campaign, but a large part of that is probably a problem with my perception. Shreveport was the home of a lot of big numbers in 1995, and so I probably got more excited about Jay than I should have. I really like his swing, but his results havenít been real impressive. Still young enough to develop. Nearly came to blows in the dugout with Kim Batiste during a televised game last year; is this indicative of some sort of problem? Defense hasnít improved from mediocre.
1996  The Giants? With prospects in their system? Where's Rod Serling? Slugged .464 at Shreveport at age 21. That's not just good; that's excellent. Right-handed batter with very quick hands the bat just jumps through the hitting zone. Not to go overboard, but his swing looks like Hank Aaron's. You remember those hands? Has a reputation of having trouble turning the deuce, but is still probably the best second baseman in the organization at this point.
