2005 Truby has nothing to do with the Pirates, and you might otherwise think he's as over as Barbara Dare's cinematic career. But after getting guaranteed money from the Royals, he's in the book because he's Mark Teahen's veteran competition for the starting job at third in Kansas City. Sort of like the observation about how Wallis Simpson wound up little better than a sweaty sailor, there was nevertheless once a time when Truby was considered hot stuff. That time is long over.
2003 Why the Tigers traded Jose Macias to get Truby is a puzzle. Probably the worst player in the AL last season, Truby had a scarcely believable .497 OPS, and the more he played, the worse he got. If the Tigers were truly desperate for a third baseman, they could have just brought Jarrod Patterson up from Toledo. Outrighted to Toledo after the season, and signed by Tampa Bay, appropriately enough.
2002 Shame on the Astros for not waiting. Vinny Castilla didnít give them much more than what you could have reasonably expected from Truby. Trubyís defense gets favorable reviews, and since he raised his hands at the plate, heís been consistently successful at driving the ball. Heís a similar player to Castilla, except that heíll be good for the next few years, while Castilla wonít.
2001 On rare occasion, an organizational soldier gets a chance. Chris Truby climbed the ladder slowly and had to repeat Double-A at age 25 when Carlos Villalobos was acquired from the Tigers in the first Brad Ausmus trade. When Villalobos was released last year, Truby did just enough in Triple-A to get a chance when Ken Caminiti went down. Eleven homers in 78 games (nine of them at home) impressed a lot of people; even so, he couldnít muster a .300 OBP, and the Astros have plenty of options at third base should he falter. Long-term, Truby isnít a starter. He could settle into the Craig Paquette role as a power-hitting hacker from the right side.
2000 After finally elevating himself to prospect status at the age of 25, Truby lost out to Carlos Villalobos in spring training and had to repeat Double-A. He showed that his power surge in 1998 was no fluke, but heís now 26 and no higher than fourth on the Astrosí depth chart at third base.
1999 Truby went from organizational soldier to prospect in one year; after never reaching double figures in homers, he hit 14 in 52 games with Kissimmee, and continued from there. It didnít come a moment too soon. Heís a consistently good fielder, and at 25 he may have a career. Caminitiís return is a big blow to his chances as an Astro.
