BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Santiago had been a positive-value player for a couple of years because he was an up-the-middle defensive asset with a bat that didn’t hurt too much. His production was something that would earn him the distinction of “a good little player.” Last year saw his production at the plate tumble: He had a .199 True Average in 259 plate appearances, baseball’s worst for anyone with 250 or more. His fielding remained above average, but it needed to be at his 2010 level (5.8 fielding runs above average) to carry that bad a bat. Considering how far afield his bat strayed from his own norm, we can reasonably expect a return in 2013 to something like the ~.250 True Average level he enjoyed in 2009-11.
2012 Santiago has spent his Motor City career essentially functioning as a donut tire, beginning each season in the trunk but ending it bolted into the lineup replacing that year’s inevitable infield blowout. Santiago’s minuscule offensive contributions keep him from being a long-term solution anywhere on the field, but his plus glove in the middle infield makes him a valuable utility player, and moderate skills against lefty pitching make him a possible platoon partner. Unable to find a starting gig on the free agent market, Santiago chose to re-up with the Tigers, where Jim Leyland is already familiar with his strengths and weaknesses and won’t be tempted to drive him above his rated speed.
2011 Santiago is a weak hitter with a nifty glove who was born to caddy for a more complete shortstop, but the Tigers haven’t had one of those for some time now. This year’s starter is Jhonny Peralta, who will certainly need the defensive support but whose recent work at the plate has hardly been more impressive than Santiago's. Expect Santiago to once again play more than he should in an ideal world, and less than he should in this one.
2010 Whatever fairy dust gave Santiago an eagle eye in 2008 vanished like so many Michigan jobs in 2009, as he reverted to his typical no-hit form. He plays a role that virtually every team in baseball has, but in this case it's not as much "backup" as "redundancy"; there's hardly any difference between Santiago and Everett in terms of the type of player they are. The team could do better to exploit what little difference there is by starting him more often against righties.
2009 When a guy with a career OPS of barely 600 puts up these kinds of numbers in limited playing time, it's not a breakout, it's a stone fluke. The Tigers know this, which is why they brought in Adam Everett to take the—wait, what? Santiago is a very good defender without much offensive ability (despite that 2008 line), but isn't that exactly what Everett is too? Color us confused.
2008 Ramon Santiago has exactly one major-league walk in each of the last three seasons. Yes, that's the most interesting thing about him
2007 Ramon Santiago is a good-field, no-hit infielder, exactly as meets the eye, although his career FRAA (-1) suggests that his defense is closer to solid than superlative. The Tigers signed him to a major league deal for 2007, but would be better served by giving his roster spot to someone like Ryan Raburn.
2005 This is all they got for Carlos Guillen. Santiago doesn't hit, but he can play short well, so it was baffling with Santiago on the roster and the team in need of a shortstop that they decided to start Jose Lopez's service time clock. Isn't that situation—team dead and buried, starter hurt—what emergency backups are for?
2003 Santiago jumped all the way from Lakeland in 2001 to Detroit in 2002, mostly because the Tigers unaccountably tried to live with Shane Halter at shortstop at the start of the season. Halter was a predictable bust, and Omar Infante was struggling, so Santiago made his debut on May 17 after only 31 games’ experience in the high minors. His rookie season was disrupted by a broken hamate bone in his right hand, for which he underwent surgery in late July, as well as chronic looseness in his left shoulder, for which he underwent surgery in late September. His future doesn’t look as bright now as it was before it was discovered that he was two years older than reported, but he has a decent chance of becoming a good player, especially if fixing his hand and shoulder problems improve his hitting.
2002 A year ago, Santiago was a better shortstop prospect than Omar Infante, but after off-season surgery to repair a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, Santiago spent the entire season as a DH. Long-term, his prospects may still be better: his pre-injury defense was good enough to foster talk of moving Infante to second base, and he made use of his time in 2001 by continuing to refine his batting eye. He’s only four months older than his more-touted competition, and his injury means that, unlike Infante, he’s in no danger of being rushed to the majors before he’s ready.
2001 Warning: Ramon Santiago flashes more leather than the drag queens at the Male Box. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just that fielding wizardry can become an organizational fetish to the point that teams excuse a player’s shortcomings. Santiago’s biggest offensive asset right now is his age, though he does seem to understand that his job is to get on base. If he does so with any regularity, he can become a very special player.

2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is your assessment of carlos sanchez? is he good enough to diplace gordon beckham this year?
(temple from madison)
Sanchez handles the bat well, makes contact, above-average runner, but lacks baseball instincts and has no power. Relies a lot on his feet and making contact… many of the hits he tallied in A+, AA, will be taken away in AAA and especially MLB. I think he's a reserve. Reminds me too much of Ramon Santiago. There's a chance I am light on him, but when the swing is bad and there's no pop, it's difficult to see past the bench. (Jason A. Churchill)
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)I am looking at having to start Giovatella or Raburn at 2B in my AL-only league this year. Is this the year Raburn finally puts it together?
(cooldude from Mpls)
I hope so. I have him at MI in CBS AL-only. Coincidentally, I have Giovatella at 2B too. Ramon Santiago doesn't pose much of a threat, but apparently Brandon Inge is looking pretty good at 2B, and he could cut into his time. As a cheap MI in AL-only, his power upside makes him worth the gamble, but this Inge news is certainly disconcerting. (Derek Carty)
