BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 Craig Monroe had a big spring training to make the Pirates' Opening Day roster, fizzled after a hot start, was released in June, and did not catch on with anyone else.
2009 Acquired from the Cubs for token veteran virtues, Craig Monroe found out what happens when a player intended to be a lefty-masher bats .138 against southpaws: he gets released. Oddly, he did bat .276/.337/.605 against righties (83 PA) but that was a stone fluke, and as of New Year's Day he's still waiting for his next team to pick up the phone.
2008 In Detroit, Monroe went from post-season hero to persona non grata in a hurry last year, but such a thing was the inevitable consequence of the late start that Monroe got on his career, which meant that the start of his decline cycle coincided with his escalating costs via arbitration. After picking him up from the Cubs for a player to be named later, the Twins signed him for $3.8 million, a million less than he earned last year. PECOTA doesn't like how his bat will play in the Metrodome, a park that can be tough on right-handed power, and regards him as no better than a replacement-level option at this stage.
2007 The hundreds of outfielders who have been tagged with the Quadruple-A label would do well to look at Craig Monroe`s career. Monroe didn`t earn a big league job until the age of 26, and then only because he happened to be around on a 119-loss team. Nevertheless, he managed to become an important contributor on a pennant-winner, mashing five home runs in last year`s playoffs. Monroe`s play will come under greater scrutiny now that arbitration will make him more expensive; the truth is that the Tigers might have outgrown him.
2006 As nice a find as Monroe has been the last two years, it is worth remembering that the average EQA for a corner outfielder is .271. Monroe isn`t much better than that, and this is the peak of his career. Another year or three where he hits like this seems to be the best you can hope for, but once he loses even a little bat speed, he`ll fall fast. Monroe isn`t the kind of player who leads a team to a title; he`s a talented understudy waiting to be replaced by a star.
2005 Another Tiger hitter who had a breakout season, as is bound to happen when you tack on a collective 236 runs. Like Brandon Inge, Monroe put together about as good a season as is possible for a player with his skills set. He's been a nice, cheap find for Detroit, but Monroe's plate discipline is poor, and he could quickly go from an asset to a liability as the team grows more serious about contention.
2003 The Tigers claimed Monroe off of waivers from the Rangers in February, and he rewarded Detroit with a solid season in Toledo. The Tigers called him up five separate times, but he was given only 25 at-bats in 13 games to show what he could do. Hes a bit long in the tooth, but has been kept on the 40-player winter roster. He has enough power to be a valuable reserve corner outfielder.
2002 Monroe appears to be the rare bird whose game elevates as the competition gets better. Except for hitting for average, Monroe meets or exceeds all design specifications for a spare outfielder, and his defense makes him very popular with the pitching staff. The Rangers liked what they saw last September, so a strong camp should land him in Arlington in April.
