BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 It can't all be sunshine and lollipops. Since the Y2K scare, only five players have posted a TAv worse than Infante's score last season: Angel Berroa (Royals), Neifi Perez (Royals), Cesar Izturis (twice!), Yadi Molina (seriously, not Jose?) and Darwin Barney (Gold Glove). Even worse, those players “earned” a little under $10 million combined for those six seasons, while Infante pocketed a cool $7.5 million all on his own last year, and will have been paid $17.75 million more after his 2018 option is bought out. His two seasons in Kansas City have been plagued by injuries, most notably bone spurs in his elbow that called for offseason surgery. In theory, a healthy Infante can provide solid defense at the keystone and a little pop at the bottom of the lineup; in practice, we'll believe it when we see it.
2015 Infante struggled through shoulder and back woes that cut into his playing time and his production. When healthy, he's usually agile and rangy at the keystone and his contact skills and occasional power can help out the bottom of the lineup, but his bat and glove were both MIA last year. There's a well-documented pattern of second basemen breaking down around Infante's age, and since the Royals will be paying him for at least three more seasons, they're hoping a winter's rest helps him buck the trend.
2014 Infante played only 118 games, a four-year low, but he quietly produced the best season of his career. After an uneven start to his career, Infante has developed into one of the league's surest bets. His contact-oriented approach is a great fit for the latter third of a batting order, while the reemergence of his early-career power makes him passable in the no. 2 spot. A serious ankle injury in July, caused by a Colby Rasmus takeout slide, reminded everybody not named Dayton Moore why second basemen don't generally age well, even when they do.
2013 Despite delivering a paltry 668 OPS as a Tiger in 64 games, for this team Infante was actually a massive upgrade at second base even before you consider the benefits of his defensive value. Prior to the July 24 trade that brought him from Miami, second base was a black hole in Detroit: Ryan Raburn fell off the map completely and Ramon Santiago was overstretched as a full-time player. Infante brings a capable bat andmore importantlya steady glove, to an infield defense known for its bats. Anibal Sanchez was the major draw of the trade, but having Infante for the remainder of 2012 plus all of 2013 sealed it for the Tigers.
2012 The Marlins acquired America's favorite All-Star utility infielder along with lefty reliever Mike Dunn from Atlanta in exchange for second baseman Dan Uggla, with plans to strip Infante of the utility tag and install him as Uggla's replacement at the keystone in 2011. Predictably, Infante was unable to sustain his .355 batting average on balls in play, with regression in infield fly ball percentage and an increase in unsuccessful bunt attempts contributing heavily to a .059 decline. However, the upgrade Infante provided over Uggla on defense more than made up for the offense lost in the transaction. Infante posted the top FRAA in baseball at 21.7 and led NL second basemen in range factor per game and assists.
2011 With three straight good years, Infante is arguably the best utility player in the game. Certainly his unlikely selection to the All-Star team was a nod in that direction. While hardly a secondary skills king, he's a .300 hitter who can play three infield positions and either outfield corner, while providing no worse than average defensively at any spot. Dealt to the Marlins in the Dan Uggla deal will likely transform him into an everyday player at second base, thereby downplaying his greatest skill, versatility, and emphasizing a bat that is merely adequate if it slips below .320.
2010 If a team plays Infante every day the holes in his game will be exposed, but he's one of the better bench players around. An excellent fastball hitter who sprays line drives all over the field, Infante can fill in at six different positions, run a bit, and rarely hurts you with fundamental mistakes. He's signed through 2010 with a club option for the following year, and at $4.75 million for the two years, he's a bargain as a playable space-saver on the roster.
2009 A handy utilityman who can play the three infield skill positions and spot in the outfield, Infante saw too much action in left last year due to the Braves dearth of viable alternatives. Still, he had one of his better years at the plate, showing increased contact and some doubles power. Hes still young enough for those improvements to be real, and previously showed some pop in his lone season as the Tigers starting second baseman back in 2004. Spotted in the infield against lefty pitching, hes an asset.
2008 It's hard to believe Infante slugged .449 and drew 40 walks as a 22-year-old, but he did. Now, he's an extra, and a good one with a little pop against lefties and no worse than an average glove at three infield positions. The Braves picked him up from the Cubs in a minor trade after the Tigers sent him to Chicago for Jacque Jones. He should serve as a helpful platoon partner for Kelly Johnson and caddy for Chipper Jones.
2007 Infante seems to have gotten himself pigeonholed as a utility infielder, which reflects a failure to manage expectations following his premature promotion to the big leagues in 2003. His profile is not dissimilar to what Juan Uribe or Carlos Guillen looked like after their age-24 seasons, and, in the abstract, it`s worth giving him a full season`s worth of playing time to see if he can replicate their development. The trouble is that the price for that information is much higher for a team hoping to contend for a title. The Tigers have a lot of players in their system whose track records provoke this sort of cognitive dissonance.
2006 Too many people wrote Infante off after an awful rookie season, and too many people praised him too highly after his sophomore year. Last year was closer to what should have been expected of him, although he did retain some of his unexpected power from 2004. The Tigers have to decide whether he`s more valuable as trade bait or as a reserve. Jim Leyland has talked about rotating Polanco, Guillen, Inge, and Infante through the three infield spots, but such talk will only last until one of them is hitting .225 and gets benched. You know who the best suspect to do that is.
2005 As we have all learned with Luis Rivas, just because you're in the major leagues at a young age doesn't make you a future star. Low-power infielders in particular frequently watch their careers fritter away by the time they're 27 or 28, their speed and defense declining just as their arbitration-eligible years are exhausted. Thus it was a very good sign that Infante demonstrated such growth in the power department. It wasn't some sort of fluke: There are few cheap home runs at Comerica Park, and Infante changed his approach at the plate entirely, posting a 0.84 GB/FB ratio after being at 1.44 the year before. PECOTA expects a bit of regression in the near-term, but also cites some favorable names on his comparables list, most notably Ryne Sandberg.
2004 After being talked about as one of the Tigers' most exciting prospects for three years, he fell out of favor with the team in less than three months. He didn't hit, he didn't field, and after not running out a flyball, he didn't have a job. The team tried to send a signal by not recalling him in September, but an injury to Halter forced Detroit to bring him up for the final week. The Tigers think they may have gotten through to him, and he was hitting extremely well in Venezuela as we went to press. At his age quantum leaps forward are not entirely impossible, but he's already played himself out of the Tigers' good graces once, and he may not even get the chance to do it twice.
2003 After a rough start to the season at Triple-A where he hit only .202 in April, Infante was disabled with a back strain and then diagnosed with spondylolysis. A program to strengthen his back muscles enabled him to return to the field, but his hitting didnt improve until he stopped trying to pull every pitch. Though Infante was voted best defensive shortstop in the International League by the loops managers, Detroit tried him out at second base during his impressive September call-up. If the Tigers can unload Damion Easley, or have the guts to bench or release him, Infante might thrive at second base. Hes very young and still somewhat raw, and would probably be overmatched by top-flight pitchers for a few years. However, having both him and Ramon Santiago in the lineup everyday would not only help Tigers pitchers with good defense at both middle infield positions, it would help their chances of contending three years from now.
2002 The single most important piece of advice we can give the Tigers front office is this: Omar Infante is not ready. Hes an excellent prospect, a 19-year-old shortstop who hit .302 in Double-A but had a secondary average of just .156. The skills are there, but not the polish, and the majors are not the place to develop that polish. Deivi Cruz, who had to jump from A ball because he was a Rule 5 draft pick, never did develop it. If the Tigers give Infante a year in Triple-A and a few months in the weight room, he could become the best young player theyve developed since Travis Fryman.
2001 Omar Infante is the youngest player in the history of the Arizona Fall League and the brother of former Tigers pitching prospect Asdrubal Infante, who was murdered in Venezuela over the 1999 off-season. Infante is advanced defensively but needs to add upper-body strength so that he can start driving the ball. He jumped three levels last year, and while he didnt embarrass himself at Lakeland, neither his performance nor the middle-infield situation in Detroit justifies rushing him.

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-10-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Christian Colon? He had a nice 2014 and seems like a solid 2b. What do you see his future as and will he get a chance to start for the Royals? Want to know more about him. Thx.
(Cristobal Colon from Pasadena, CA)
A certain segment of Royals fans will always link Colon with Chris Sale, which is a fair standard for the organization, but somewhat unfair for Colon. He impressed team officials by embracing his utility role this season. When the club traded Danny Valencia in July, they said the imperative was getting Colon to the majors. It would make some sense for Colon to get 250-300 at-bats next season as a backup for Omar Infante and a right-handed complement to Mike Moustakas at third base.

But, who knows. (Andy McCullough)
2014-10-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)The Royals come to you and say "bruh, this walk-up music we're using sucks. You like music, don't you? Choose the walk-up music for this whole lineup..." Nine players, nine songs. GO!
(Bruh from Club)
I did this in a mailbag bag in August. Forgive the jumbled up lineup:

1. Nori Aoki: "The Downfall of Us All" by A Day To Remember. This would just be an amusing way to start the first inning.

2. Omar Infante: "Mojo So Dope" by Kid Cudi. Omar is a laid-back fellow.

3. Salvador Perez: "Simon Says" by Pharoah Monche. The Godzilla introduction would be excellent.

4. Billy Butler: "Some Guys Have All The Luck" by Rod Stewart. A classic for the perpetually put-upon DH.

5. Alex Gordon: "Put On" by Young Jeezy. Either this, or "My Hero" by Foo Fighters. Or "The Best" by Tina Turner. I doubt Gordon would like the latter choices.

6. Josh Willingham: "Top Notch" by Manchester Orchestra. Non-descript rock music.

7. Lorenzo Cain: "Hold On, We're Going Home" by Drake. Smoother than LoCain flagging down a line drive in center.

8. Mike Moustakas: "You Wanted More" by Tonic. What? It's a good guitar riff.

9. Alcides Escobar: "Bowtie" by Outkast. I don't know. Feels like it fits. (Andy McCullough)
2014-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Dustin Pedroia and good comp for Rougned Odor or is that more on the optimistic side? Both play with a lot of intensity, power in the 15-20 HR range, 35-40 doubles, hit between 280 - .300? Pedroia may strikeout less, but, to me, those seem like reasonable numbers for Odor.
(Lorenzo from Jacksonville)
Giving anyone that comp would be VERY optimistic. Probably more Omar Infante, but perfect world stuff would be the Pedroia stuff (Paul Sporer)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Hernan Perez do a good job replacing Omar Infante at 2B? Or do they go to FA to find a replacement
(Bob from LA)
If the Tigers are serious about making another run at a World Series, I think they need to do one of two things -- assuming the number one thing is a healthy Miguel Cabrera -- and that's either find an offense upgrade at second base or left field. If they do something big in left field, then they can probably survive with Perez at second base. If they need some offense out of the position, that's not going to end well. He's not ready in that respect, and I'm not sure he's ever going to have the bat to be more than utility guy. (Mark Anderson)
2013-11-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)I understand no qualifying offer for Jhonny Peralta, but Omar Infante and Joaquin Benoit? They need both guys and now if they don't sign they don't get a draft pick either.
(DetroitDale from Tallahassee (eternal spring training))
What relievers have ever made qualifying offer money? Rivera, and...Rivera. Papelbon, almost. Benoit is good, but he's not going to get that on the open market. I agree that there was a more compelling case to make for extending the QO to Infante. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Just wondering if there's any hope for Ryan Raburn or Sean Rodriguez now. I thought they were great MI sleepers in April.
(Francisco from Toronto)
Raburn's BABIP is only .225 where's he's been comfortably over .300 in previous seasons. He appears to be walking and striking out at about the same rate as last season, but he wasn't really that valuable last season. I'd want to check out his approach a little bit more closely to see what's changed, but unless his bat speed is totally gone, he'll probably be better in the second half. But he won't be so much better that the Tigers will regret getting Omar Infante.

Sean Rodirguez just isn't that good a hitter. The problem this year is he's walking less than last season (and his BABIP in 2010 hasn't been repeated), but he could still be useful as super-sub reserve in real life. In fantasy, I don't see it. (Dan Turkenkopf)
2010-10-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you give me a good reason why Omar Infante should not be the Braves' starting shortstop next year? He can field, and he's proved he can hit at least as well as your garden-variety Jeter.
(John from Atlanta)
Because the Braves have plenty of experience with Infante breaking down, the ability to notice that A-Gonz has had his own failings health-wise, and there aren't a lot of great options to pick from on the open market. I think it's great that the Braves have a nice stack at shortstop already set aside, because look at how many clubs are short at short. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-07-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)NL All-Stars: Omar Infante vs. Joey Votto - discuss.
(GBSimons from Boise, ID)
The internet has already expressed its displeasure at the pick, so I don't have much to add. However, if we're going to blame someone, we should blame Bud Selig instead of Charlie Manuel, since MLB apparently decreed that a utility player must be present for each side.

Chinese food is here--I'll tip well. It's hot out there. (Ben Lindbergh)
2009-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jay, how do the Braves fix their absolute mess of an outfield, now and down the road?
(steveomd from Ohio)
Start by pulling the ol' switcheroo the next time the traveling secretary hands out plane tickets to Jeff Francoeur and Garret Anderson, maybe something along the lines of a flight to Tijuana via Nova Scotia.

I'd start with the assumption that McLouth should be playing a corner position (does he have the arm for right?), platoon Gregor Blanco and Omar Infante in center, at least until you're satisfied Schafer is ready, and try to find a lefty bat that can match with Matt Diaz in left. And look forward to the day when Jason Heyward is ready (two years?). (Jay Jaffe)
