BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2007 The quintessential Quadruple-A pitcher, Adam Bernero has the stuff of an undrafted pitcher and the savvy of a pitcher who made it to the majors in barely a year anyway. He`s another player Allard Baird lured to Boston after the season.
2005 Acquired from Detroit as part of the Ben Petrick trade. Bernero was always a borderline prospect with a little potential to surprise. He had some reasonable numbers in the minors, and would occasionally show a glimpse of his potential in the bigs, even as he was generally getting whacked around the yard. He's now clearly established as a fringe pitcher in the John Wasdin phylum, and was outrighted. He'll have his agent on the phone trying to wrangle a spring training invite somewhere.
2004 Acquired by the Rockies for Ben Petrick in an exchange of sources of disgust, Berner() was deposited in the Rockies pen for lack of any other idea of what to do with him. He flirted with usefulness early on, but then the league caught up to his assortment of junk, and there's little reason to expect him to be anything more than a (f)utility pitcher-apologies to jay Jaffe-especially now that Nelson Cruz is out of the way.
2003 Following his promotion from Triple-A in May after a hot streak in Toledo—being named Pitcher of the Week in the IL or PCL results in promotions way more often than it should—Bernero made 11 starts and was pounded for a 6.72 ERA. Shunted to the bullpen, he was only a little bit better (5.30 ERA). A finesse pitcher, Bernero has dropped off the prospect radar screen. He’s the kind of pitcher that has enough experience and just enough stuff to get minor league hitters out, but not enough to get by in the majors.
2002 The fairy tale hit a snag. Bernero, who zoomed from undrafted free agent to the majors in barely a year, was put in his place at Triple-A. The basic utensils—an upper-80s fastball with good movement, command of four pitches—are still there, and he survived the humiliation well enough to get a look-see in September. A career in long relief is his if he wants it.
2001 His rise to the majors was the most improbable of any player's in the game last season. Adam Bernero was signed as an undrafted free agent out of a Division II school, yet Barry Zito was the only hurler from the 1999 draft class to reach the majors faster. Bernero throws four pitches for strikes, his high-80s fastball being the weakest in his repertoire. The Tigers are going to give him an opportunity to crack the rotation in spring training, but given their desire to contend, he’ll probably begin the season in long relief at Toledo.
