2003 In May, with Matt Anderson injured, Acevedo became the Tigers’ closer by default. He did a decent job in the role, although he allowed 11 unearned runs, making his 2.65 ERA much less impressive. Acevedo is aggressive with his fastball but his motion gives hitters a good look at the pitch; his four-seamer is usually straight. Without a plus breaking pitch that can get him the strikeouts needed by a top closer, he’s better suited for setup work. He’ll be elsewhere in 2003.
2002 With Braden Looper and Antonio Alfonseca, the Marlins really didn't need another right-handed reliever with issues against left-handed batters. They dealt for Acevedo at midseason anyway. He's an interchangeable part, and he's trying to make the Tigers' bullpen this spring. Comerica Park could make him look valuable.
2001 Juan Acevedo pitched well in the second half last year, but can he continue? He had a history in St. Louis of failing to sustain his success in a given role from year to year. One thing he’s got going for him now is that the Brewers seem pretty well convinced that he’s cut out to be a setup man. The Cardinals, in contrast, seemed to redefine his role every time he had three poor outings in a row.
2000 What went wrong? The easiest explanation is that he was a victim of the general confusion about what to do with the pitching staff. Closing allowed his breaking stuff to get stale, so that when they bumped him back into the rotation a month into the season, he didn't have command of his curve, slider or change, and he's never been overpowering. Traded to Milwaukee for Fernando Vina, there’s a rotation spot waiting for him.
1999 After doing good work as a starter, Acevedo got hurt again, so he’s going to be left in the bullpen as the team’s closer, which is sort of an in-your-face gesture to all of the Cardinals’ minor league closers. But this is where closers come from, besides the waiver wire: decent starters with endurance problems or who can’t come up with a third pitch. Among today’s closers, 21 of 30 were starters for most of their careers or minor league careers before going to the pen. Some of the names would surprise you: even guys like Rod Beck or Jerry DiPoto were starters once upon a time. The point is that Acevedo should end up being a very wealthy and successful guy.
1998 Has had a rough time with injuries and other setbacks, but still a serviceable pitcher. Acevedo doesn’t overpower anybody, but he moves the ball around and knows how to pitch. Could end up filling out a rotation or bullpen almost anywhere, and should continue at this performance level for at least two or three more years. Like Chris Kahrl, a really big “Three’s Company” fan, too.
1997 The Mets insisted on him when they traded Saberhagen to the Rockies, believing 1994 was the real Acevedo. It’s hard to tell; he’s had one injury after another ever since. This year, it was a stress fracture in his shin. Tomorrow?
1996  The Rockies' top prospect a year ago, Acevedo struggled some in 1995, allowing the Mets to steal him (along with Arnold Gooch) for Bret Saberhagen in mid-season. Acevedo was shut down shortly after he was acquired because of arm trouble, but it isn't expected to be serious. The Mets' rotation is crowded, but Acevedo has the talent to be the fifth starter. Don't be fooled by his numbers last year - Acevedo is an extreme fly ball pitcher, and posted an 8.31 ERA in Denver's thin air. He's so relieved to leave Coors Field he may just win 15 games.
