2004 A failed starter getting an audition in relief is about as newsworthy as the cancellation of whichever new FOX series gets the most promotional time in the World Series. (Skin, anyone?) A career reliever moving to the rotation is much less common, but after noticing that Voyles tends to get too amped and struggle in his first inning, the Royals made him a starter at mid-season. The early results were promising, but as in relief, Voyles was considerably less successful in his major league auditions. In either role, he lacks the hop on his fastball or the command of his big-breaking curveball to project much beyond replacement-level quality.
2003 Voyles is a one-trick pony, but unlike most pitchers with one dominant pitch, his bread-and-butter is a curveball that breaks hard and breaks late. When he throws it consistently for strikes, hes a bear to hit against. When he has trouble getting it over the plate, which is most of the time, it means baserunners galore. The five home runs he gave up with the Royals last season doubled his total in five professional seasons. A lot of minor league pitchers are one-walk-per-nine-innings away from major league success. Voyles is probably closer to two.
2002 Voyles began the year by breaking his ankle and got healthy just in time to be traded to the Royals for Rey Sanchez. He was a bit lost behind Billy Sylvester and Tim Spooneybarger in the Braves organization; here, he comes to a franchise loaded with live arms better-suited for relief. Voyles was effective when he pitched this year, with good heat and filthy breaking stuff. His lousy AFL stint indicates that he should get some Triple-A experience in 2002.
