2003 The Blake Stein bandwagon is just about empty. He simply lacks the command—and the ability to prevent his high fastball from ending up in the seats—to succeed as anything more than a back-of-the-bullpen pitcher. His fastball will get him more chances, and if he ends up in a spacious ballpark, he might even take advantage of one of them.
2002 This is all that's left from the Kevin Appier trade, and it's not very good. Stein appeared to have a breakthrough in 2000, but after a terrible start to 2001, he spent the year being jerked in and out of the rotation. After April, he pitched about as well as he had in 2000. Stein is one of Gary Huckabay's one-walk-per-game guys: if he can improve his control by that much, he'll have success.
2001 Blake Stein is practically all that the Royals got for Kevin Appier, yet he alone may justify the trade. The line drive that broke his arm in spring training and cost him half a season may be a blessing in the long term, as he was worked pretty hard after he returned. Stein has that rare rising fastball that hitters will chase, only occasionally dumping it into the bleachers. He is a big guy and, at 28, the old man in the rotation, so the Royals would do well to ride him for 35 starts and 240 innings this year.
2000 Give the Royals credit: though largely criticized for the return on Kevin Appier at the trading deadline, Robinson had the wisdom to pick up a good minor-league starter who had already received his initiation the year before. An obscene lack of run support left Stein with just one win to show for an impressive six-week run. His two-seam fastball tails away from left-handed hitters and his out pitch is a four-seam fastball. Pitchers who rely on a fastball high in the strike zone walk a tightrope each time out. Given his mediocre strikeout-to-walk ratio, I’m not convinced that Stein has major-league hitters licked yet.
1998 A throw-in in the McGwire deal. One of the “If he can lose one walk per game…” class of pitchers. Could be in either Huntsville or Edmonton next year.
1997 A relative unknown drafted out of Spring Hill College in ’95, Stein is a huge (6' 7") fireballer who bears watching in the future.
