2005 Picked seventh overall by the Royals in the 1997 draft, Reichert hasn't panned out quite like anybody hoped. Toronto gave him a shot and passed after an uninspiring performance in 2003, and the Brewers never bothered to call him up in 2004 despite pitching moderately well for Indianapolis. Still just 28 years old, there are worse ways to spend a minor league contract and an invite to spring training.
2003 He’s a former first round pick. He didn’t let the onset of diabetes faze him. He has an excellent minor league track record. Scouts are biologically incapable of mentioning his slider without using the word “filthy.” His 2.46 career groundball/flyball ratio is second only to Derek Lowe among AL pitchers. Despite all that, the Royals never got him to succeed at the major league level, and summarily released him in September. Reichert was immediately claimed on waivers by the Devil Rays; he would have been claimed by 28 other major league teams if they had the chance. Expect big things from Reichert in the coming years. Don’t expect the Royals to learn anything from this debacle.
2002 Muser's impatience with Reichert's control problems led to the right-hander's demotion in July. He has all the stuff to be a dominant power/ground-ball pitcher, he just hasn't been able to throw enough strikes. Concern about his stamina may lead the Royals to move him to relief, although they have a lot of candidates for bullpen jobs. No matter his role, Reichert belongs in the majors, working on strike one.
2001 The Royals began the season with two highly-touted rookies on their pitching staff. Chad Durbin got shelled in two different stints in the rotation. Dan Reichert, who was awful during a rotation trial in 1999, started in the bullpen and pitched so well that he was promoted to the rotation in June. This is not a coincidence, friends. Reichert has the most electrifying and exasperating stuff on the team, best exhibited when he walked nine Yankees in one start without allowing a run. If Jose Rosado is healthy, the Royals may benefit by once again using Reichert as a middle-relief weapon. Reichert had the highest ground-ball/fly-ball ratio of any pitcher in baseball (minimum: 150 innings) and has the highest upside of any pitcher in the organization.
2000 This is why Mark Wiley should have been fired. Reichert, who was leading the PCL in strikeouts when he was recalled, completely lost confidence in a fastball that Triple-A observers had called “filthy.” With only his slider to throw for strikes, Reichert gave up 20 walks and 23 hits in 14 innings over four starts. He pitched better in August (4.76 ERA) before a line drive left him with a stress fracture in his right arm and ended his season. On one hand, it disabled Reichert just as he was regaining confidence in himself, but on the other it gave his arm some rest after he had worked deep into a lot of games in Triple-A. One thing is for sure: he only adds to the uncertainty regarding the Royals’ pitching staff this year.
1999 The Royals' #1 pick in 1997, he's been more remarkable as a human interest story than as a pitcher so far. He was so impressive out of spring training that he was started at AA, where he was saluted with line drives everywhere - but more worrisome, he lost 25 pounds off an already-skinny frame and looked terrible. He was finally diagnosed with diabetes, and it would have been understandable if he had been given the year off to regain strength and learn how to handle the disease. But two months later he was throwing short outings in the Midwest League, and he came on so fast that he touched down for two starts in Wilmington and then held his own in AAA for 3 starts.

For any player to reach AAA the year after he's drafted is impressive; given what Reichert's gone through, it's a miracle. He's getting work in the AFL, and throwing well. Diabetes is a tough disease to control given the unpredictable day-to-day schedule of the pro athlete, but as a starter he only needs to follow a strict timetable maybe 35 times a year. He may yet succumb to the demands and complications of his condition, but know this: don't bet against him.
