2005 Scouting May out of the Japanese leagues was an inspired move by Baird, but it didn't work out quite as well as he would have liked. May's only serious vice is a propensity for doling out homers, which makes him appealing in his new venue in Petco Park, which reduced home runs by over 30% last season. Turn ten home runs into outs, and May's ERA drops by half a run, even before you account for the lack of DH. He's a good bet for 200 innings with an ERA close to four.
2003 A worthwhile investment that hasn’t paid dividends so far, May had pitched the four previous seasons in Japan, where he was one of the Central League’s most consistent starting pitchers. He turned down a multimillion dollar offer to stay in Japan for the Royals’ modest sum of $375,000. He’s an extreme flyball pitcher working in the best home-run park in the AL. If he cuts his homers allowed in half—which could happen if the Royals move their fences out—he’ll be an above-average starter.
1998 Instead of wasting time with Langston this March, the Angels should spend a lot of time developing this guy. May doesn’t have spectacular stuff, but he has good movement and a track record of success. He pitched OK in mopup last year and split two starts. He seems to be operating at his limits, so I wouldn’t make him Roger Clemens, but as a fifth starter/long reliever he could be a contributor for a couple of years.
1997 May has consistently pitched well enough to earn a serious major league trial, and with Terry Collins and his new regime coming in, he just might get it. I really like this guy, despite all the obvious problems in his statistical record. I think that Earl Weaver could make him a mighty valuable pitcher. I don’t know if Terry Collins is up to that task. Will probably start the year in AAA.
1996  One of the biggest sleepers in the organization. He's probably the Braves' best left-handed prospect - he's a lot more polished than Terrell Wade - and if he can claim the fifth starter spot this year, he could surprise a lot of people.
