2008 Victor Santos was a piece of chewing gum (or was he bailing wire?) that the Orioles sent to the mound last September following his marginally respectable summer with the Reds.
2007 Another Bucs hurler with a crazy-high BABIP. You had to be at PNC Park last year to see the way the Pirates fielders reacted with lightning indifference to the crack of the bat. Some of them specialized at being motionless, while others were merely inert. Among pitchers who logged over 100 innings, only Ryan Madson of the Phillies successfully combined pitching ineptitude with defensive non-support to post a BABIP higher than Santos`s. Santos isn`t actually all that good, but he could do a better impression of competent defensive work behind him. He continues to operate with a reverse platoon split, which indicates how well right-handed batters have hit him. Designated for assignment in October, he signed a minor league deal with the Reds in January. He`s unlikely to provide much more than organizational depth.
2006 Basically a junkballer who spins an occasionally pretty curve, Santos lost his job once Helling was resurrected. Demand for fifth starters was up this past winter, though, as Santos was flipped from Milwaukee to K.C. to Pittsburgh during this winter`s game of roster footsie, winding up a Pirate through the Rule 5 draft. He`ll compete for a job, providing veteran adequacy in case the prospects don`t pan out. He could always wind up being offered back to the Royals, where he`d do the same for them.
2005 Despite just turning 28, Santos is already a journeyman, having been through four organizations in the past three seasons. His success in the first half (4.08 ERA) of the season was a revelation for the Brewers, but the wheels came flying off (5.97 ERA) after the All-Star break. From that point on, he allowed 13 home runs in 72 innings, accounting for the collapse. He will go to spring training penciled in as a member of the rotation, but don't expect him to keep it for the entire season.
2002 Santos got a lot of press for his excellent debut; he kicked off his career by going 27 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run, the longest such streak since Fernando Valenzuela started with 34 straight. He struggled with his control after that, and his long-term outlook isn’t as rosy as Pineda’s. In 2002, the two of them should work behind Matt Anderson and Danny Patterson to give the Tigers the deepest bullpen they’ve had in some time.
2001 Undrafted out of high school because of a bum ankle, Victor Santos produced a string of good performances at each rung of the ladder that landed him a spot on the Tigers’ 40-man roster following the 1999 season. Last year, after not missing a start in five years, he blew out his elbow and underwent Tommy John surgery. While his 90-mph fastball should eventually return, his best chance to have a significant career is gone.
2000 A very good year at Double-A vaulted Santos from a marginal to a legitimate prospect. The Tigers’ farm system suffers from the same problem as the major-league team: plenty of good prospects, nobody who qualifies as a phenom. Santos projects as a league-average pitcher in two or three years, a good #5 starter. Unless the Tigers get lucky and a couple of their prospects advance past their ceiling, they’re looking at a lot of #5 starters and no one capable of handling a larger role.
1999 Another good, young arm who is still several years away. Credit the Tigers for making the commitment to find these talents, but with the notable exception of Justin Thompson, they have yet to return their investment with a yield of major league power pitchers. Long-term, Santos could be the real deal; for 1999, I would be impressed with a September callup.
