2009 And now, the end is near, and so Runelvys Hernandez faces the final curtain...
2007 This guy you can write off. The sinister Mr. Applegate negated his contract after Hernandez went 4-0 with a 1.36 ERA in April 2003, but the Royals stuck with him through Tommy John surgery and the David Wells Diet. At some point, even the Royals had to cry uncle; from May 1, 2003 until the end of the 2006 season, Hernandez put up a 6.11 ERA in 321 innings. Released, he was signed to a minor league deal by the Red Sox; apparently new Bosox assistant GM Allard Baird just can`t let go.
2006 Hernandez owes his reputation in Kansas City to the organizational commitment to low expectations. Ordinarily a 5.52 ERA is not considered a success, but the Royals raved about his return from Tommy John surgery and consider him one of the pillars of their rotation. Hernandez wasn`t all that great before his surgery; he`s never whiffed more than 5.5 batters per nine. The Royals may hang their hat on pitchers rebounding in their second year following TJ surgery, but they won`t want to hang their hat on Hernandez`s 9.45 ERA from last August 1st on.
2005 Sometimes the best thing that can happen to a pitcher is that he goes under the knife. The Royals were already frustrated with Hernandez's work ethic before he blew out his elbow, and were skeptical that he would dedicate himself to his rehab. They were pleasantly surprised that he used his Tommy John surgery as a wake-up call to take his career more seriously; his rehab went very well and he's expected back in the Royals' rotation on Opening Day. Before his elbow started to hurt, Hernandez had a 3.50 ERA in his first 17 career starts,
2003 Sometimes, you just get lucky. This Hernandez needed three years to get out of the Dominican Summer League, but since coming stateside in 2001 he’s risen faster than anyone this side of Theo Epstein. Like Berroa, he gained two years in the AgeGate revelations, but as a pitcher that hardly changes his outlook—if anything, it just means he’s probably less prone to breaking down. With Byrd gone, Hernandez has the inside track to start on Opening Day.
