BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2007 Claimed off of waivers on July 5, Guiel seemed like the foundation of a passable right field platoon with Bernie Williams, but the acquisition of Abreu put an end to that. Guiel found himself in the minors for the next three weeks, returning as part of an ill-defined first-base rotation with Giambi and Craig Wilson. A left-hander with a bit of pop and versatile enough that the Yankees used him at all three outfield positions and first base, Guiel could be useful in a fifth outfielder/pinch-hitting role for another year or two. The Yankees` sole non-tender in December, he`s joined the Yakult Swallows for 2007.
2006 The organizational soldier proved that he had completely overcome the vision problems that torpedoed his 2004 season. To get back, he accepted a minor league assignment, anchored Omaha`s lineup with 30 homers, then returned to Kansas City in August and hit about as well as he did in his breakout season in 2003. Like a lot of guys in the organization, he makes a hell of a fourth outfielder. He`s also 33 and has likely seen his best days. At-bat for at-bat, he`s the same hitter as Matt Stairs, only with better wheels and a better glove. The Royals re-signed Stairs anyway, forcing Guiel to fight for a roster spot again this spring.
2005 The Royals' favorite surprise of 2003 was a complete non-factor last season, thanks to a vision problem no one could get a handle on. He required nearly six weeks to get back on the field after LASIK surgery in May, which was the first clue that something was amiss. After a successful rehab stint in Omaha, he returned to the lineup in August and struggled, before the team admitted he was still having vision trouble. Everyone claims Guiel should be fine in the spring, but this is not a team—or a medical staff—that inspires confidence.
2003 After seven pro seasons without sniffing the majors, Guiel was toiling in Mexico when the Royals picked him up in 2000. He was hitting .353 in Omaha last year when he became the third-oldest player ever to make his major league debut in a Royals uniform. (The Royals went back to that well again last July, signing ex-major leaguer Edwin Hurtado, who was leading the Mexican League with a 1.38 ERA.) Guiel has excellent bat speed and a line-drive stroke, so despite his disappointing debut, I don’t think we’ve heard the last of him.
1999 Guiel missed most of the season in Las Vegas due to injury. Although his defense is really poor no matter where he plays, his power has spiked since the move to the outfield, which has him looking like a major-league quality pinch-hitter.
1998 Guiel, a converted infielder acquired from the Angels for Angelo Encarnacion, had the best year of his career last season. He’s too old to be called a prospect, but if he keeps the power up he may be one of the lucky career Triple-A guys called up for a couple of years as a fourth outfielder in the majors.
