BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2005 The former wunderkind hit rock bottom last season after posting a strikeout-to-walk ratio that looked like a misprint (9 Ks, 20 BBs) in a brief trial in the Royals rotation. With his career on life support, George returned to Omaha and found the four mph that had disappeared from his fastball in 2001. No one has any explanation for where the extra velocity came from, but it helped George go 7-1 down the stretch in Triple-A and get a September call-up. Despite struggling yet again, he was kept on the 40-man roster over the winter. Left-handers who throw 94 in relief will continue to get chances.
2003 The wheels have come off the Chris George train faster than Christina Aguilera’s clothes. For a command pitcher, he showed no control, allowing more than a walk every two innings in Omaha. More ominously, his fastball lost a foot from the year before. He’s still very young and has a good head on his shoulders, so assuming there isn’t any structural reason for his decline, his bounce-back potential is pretty high.
2002 The Big Cheese. George gets raves for his command of good, not great, stuff, especially his ability to change speeds. He's advanced through the system even though his peripherals have not been very impressive, in part because he's posted good primary numbers, in part because scouts love him. He did not pitch well for the Royals, and it's not clear that he's ready for the major leagues. The Royals should give him at least another half-season in Triple-A, at least until they get a new manager.
2001 Chris George is a rare phenomenon. Despite his superficially unimpressive performance record, analysts and scouts are almost universally in agreement that he is one awesome prospect. After wowing everyone in 1999 with his understanding of how to pitch, he showed up last year with a couple mph added to his fastball. Despite episodic battles with control--like an adolescent struggling with his coordination after a growth spurt--he ascended to the top of the class among left-handed pitching prospects. His supporting role on the U.S. Olympic team has the Royals thinking that he is almost ready to be unleashed on major-league hitters. If the Royals do their best impression of the 1991 Braves in the next year or two, here’s their Steve Avery.
2000 The minor leagues were impossibly deep in left-handed teenage pitching prospects last year, and while Rick Ankiel, Matt Riley and Ryan Anderson got the headlines, Chris George quietly staked his own claim on being the next great southpaw. Most teams were surprised when George was taken as a supplemental first-rounder in 1998, because his fastball is only in the high 80s, but George impressed the Royals enough that they started him in the Carolina League in his first full year. He matched Jeff Austin start-for-start despite spotting Austin three years of experience. There’s a lot of quiet excitement in the organization about George, and with good reason.
