BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2003 A useful bench player at his peak, Alicea was decidedly off-peak during his two years with the Royals. He earned his keep by working with Carlos Beltran on a series of hitting drills—like swinging one-handed to gain bat control—that Beltran credits with his turnaround after the 2001 All-Star break. This is the kind of Latin influence the Royals need, not Neifi Perez distracting Carlos Febles with daily card games. After a nice 13-year career, Alicea has come to the end of the road.
2002 Most utility infielders who can't handle shortstop have the half-life of fresh-baked bread. Alicea stays around because he hits better than the rest of the species, and he has a knack for picking teams with lousy or fragile second basemen. He'll be back in Kansas City, making it all too easy for Tony Muser to screw with Carlos Febles. And just where is Geronimo Pena these days?
2001 Luis Alicea played exceptionally well in the first half of the season, with solid defense and an OBP near .400. Then he collapsed, hitting approximately like Rey Sanchez after the All-Star break. Alicea rebounded in September and was probably auditioning for a position as a utility man at that point. With Catalanotto, Jason Romano, and Mike Young in this organization, he’s not going to be coming back to Arlington.
2000 Much of the blame for that terrible 1999 line belongs to a wrist injury that hampered him through most of the first half. In the second half, he hit as well as could be expected: .254/.329/.463. If healthy, he should outperform the projection by a little. At his age, the "if" is a big one.
1999 His defensive skills are on the wane, but his flexibility is valuable and he continues to get on base at a respectable rate. In 1998 he showed a bit more pop than he has in the past. Contrary to the projection above, I wouldn't be surprised to see the slugging average continue to rise next year.
1998 Alicea played very well through midsummer (.288/.394/.421, first half). His right hamstring acted up in July and wore him down the rest of the year, limiting his performance and playing time after the All-Star break. Staying healthy has always been a problem for Alicea; he can contribute, but having him around forces you to have a backup plan. Texas doesn’t mind; they’ve signed him.
1997 A good example of replacement level talent. Alicea has excellent range, but because he was credited with 24 errors, a lot of people decided he was awful afield. Spending most of the year in the eighth slot, Alicea was given ten free passes. Why?
1996  A switch-hitter who'll take a walk, the Red Sox tried to use him in the leadoff spot early in the season but he failed miserably there. Moved to the nine-hole, he returned to hitting in his usual manner. Pretty good in the field, his role is uncertain with the acquisition of Cordero.
