2014-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you think throws the nastiest pitch in the MLB right now, and what is it?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
Double dose of Shawny. Big Fern's breaking ball, "El Defector," is the dirtiest thing to come out of a pitcher's hand since the 2006 playoffs, when Kenny Rogers lacquered his palm in pine tar. (Doug Thorburn)
2009-09-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Okay, so I will be the 5,786th person to ask this: Chamberlain or Gaudin for Game 4 of the (possible) ALCS? I still say Chamberlain as I can see him handling anyone on his day.
(jschmeagol from college park, md)
Well, I choose Chamberlain, in part because the Yankees have a fair amount of effective relievers, so Chamberlain wouldn't be a high-leverage guy. If this were the Phillies, it'd be different.

Mostly, I think the debate is silly. The #4 guy starts once a series, throws maybe six innings, usually less. The 1996 Yankees used...what was it, Kenny Rogers?...three times, got no good starts and won the World Series. David Weathers seemed to pitch great in all three games. Hell, with the additional off days, you should probably use a three-man rotation, anyway. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-12-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will, any clue as to what we can expect from Jeremy Bonderman this year? Any comps out there?
(don from ann arbor, MI)
Kenny Rogers is the closest comp pitching-wise, tho David Cone is close. I think he'll come back and essentially be a bit behind where he was until mid-season. It might, in the long run, be a good thing since even handled smartly, he has a lot of innings on a young arm. The more I think about Bonderman, they more I really like the Kenny Rogers comp for his career, except maybe longevity. (Will Carroll)
2008-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Steve; Will Phil Coke be a starter or reliever in NY or Scranton? Will Brett Gardner really be the opening day starting centerfielder?
(Eric from Manorville)
My own sense of Coke's development is that the bullpen would be a better fit, but the Yankees seem to be ambivalent at this point. I don't see the harm of giving him a year in the pen and putting off the decision for awhile (it worked for Kenny Rogers, sort of) either way. As for Gardner, my sense is they're looking for alternatives. It's actually a difficult choice, as success or failure on Gardner's part is a question of ten singles falling in or getting caught. I don't think he's an impact player either way, but he could certainly hold down the position for a bridge year or half a year until Austin Jackson shows he can be more of a producer in center. (Steven Goldman)
2008-09-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm not clear on the trade rules, but remember some trades made in September before. The Mets are so desperate for pitching and with teams out of it, why would they not try to pick up someone like Kenny Rogers or Jarrod Washburn?
(Matt from Queens)
I'm not sure they're not trying. Either acquisition would be ineligible for the postseason, but they could definitely use the help to stave off the Phils... (Derek Jacques)
2008-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)i for one think the reds are the overwhelmingly CLEAR winners in the volquez/hamilton trade. first off, both teams needed pitching more than hitting, so the team getting the pitcher is already up. second, the reds had bruce to replace hamilton.. where's volquez v2.0 in texas? mostly though, it seems like hamilton is having an mvp year, but only an average year relative to other mvps. volquez's dominance this year - if this pace is kept up - is seemingly legendary.
(joelefkowitz from boonton, nj)
Finally turned in that column, so I'm all yours now -- and I can finally get some music going. Writing in two windows plus humming a tune is more than my small brain can process at once... Here's an interesting question for you: the Rangers suck at developing pitching. Are historically bad at it. After Kevin Brown (who had to get away from them to get really good) and Kenny Rogers, there's really no one, and they were well on their way to ruining Volquez. Say they recognize that they are incapable of developing him. Therefore, he was zero value TO THEM. His value to the Reds is irrelevant. In this sense, the Rangers win the trade, because they gave up something of no utility and got an MVP candidate. See what I'm saying? (Steven Goldman)
2008-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)The old park was just fine to pitch in. Plenty of pitchers were fine there. Ryan, Fergie Jenkins, Gaylor Perry, Ron Darling, Kevin Brown, Kenny Rogers, Charlie Hough, and many others. The new park opened in 1995.
(Ira from North Texas)
Yeah, but they didn't bake any of those guys. They came in as vets (and Ron Darling left as a minor leaguer). Kevin Brown and Kenny Rogers are the only homegrown pitchers of significance in team history. Heck, I'm still waiting for Ed Correa's comeback. (Steven Goldman)
