2005 We all know and love Herb Perry, and he's no fool. When you look in one direction and see Hank Blalock, and look in the other and see Mark Teixeira, it's not too hard to figure out that it's time to look into greener pastures. He's a free agent coming off knee surgery, has a long history of nasty health issues, and he'll be hard pressed to find anything more than a minor league contract with a spring training invite.
2003 Herbert Perry’s playing time should be a good reverse indicator of the Rangers’ success over the next two years. If Perry is limited to spot starts and pinch hits against lefties, it’ll most likely be because Blalock and Teixeira are entrenching themselves in the lineup and on their way to becoming stars. If Perry is the regular third baseman—or worse, the regular first baseman—it’ll be because something went wrong. Perry’s a good player, and would be a bargain for a lot of teams at two years and $3 million. But it’s not clear he should be paid that kind of money by a team that hopes they don’t have to use him much.
2002 Hawk Harrelson is as irritating as a Tabasco enema, but "The Milkman"—his moniker for Perry, because "he delivers"—really is a cool nickname. Perry delivered a lot less in 2001, though, as he struggled to stay healthy following his surprise performance in 2000. Bumped out of Chicago by Joe Crede, Perry was traded to the Rangers, with whom he'll be a good bench player and backup for Mike Lamb and Carlos Pena.
2001 Herb Perry was a waiver-wire steal, but the bad wheels that got him waived in the first place came back to haunt the Sox in August after they’d demoted Greg Norton. Perry's inability to run hurt the team in the playoffs. As a third baseman, he starts double plays and moves to his left well, which is considerably more than anyone with five knee operations is expected to do. If Konerko gets moved and Crede comes up, Perry could split a lot of time at first base with Liefer.
2000 Is Luis Mandoki on the Rays' payroll, or what? In this tearjerker, a small-town hero overcomes five knee operations and returns to his home state to play in the majors after being given up for dead. Cut to reality. Perry doesn't hit enough to be of much value at the infield corners or DH. He's also a health risk, and The Trop is one of three artificial turf fields in the league. Rothschild has many better options, if only he would recognize them.
1998 Constant knee injuries have slagged him the last two years. His real opportunity will be to spot Fred McGriff against people like Randy Johnson, do some pinch-hitting and get some time at DH. With 11-man pitching staffs, that means he’ll frequently shuttle between Durham and Tampa, assuming he’s healthy enough to play in consecutive weeks. A strange guy to draft, since Cleveland was almost certain to remove him from their 40-man roster prior to the Rule V draft.
1997 If Perry was a more durable player, the Indians would be in much, much better shape. They wouldn’t have had to enter the cycle of trades that forced them to acquire first Mark Carreon, then Kevin Seitzer. But the two constants of Perry’s career have been hitting and his being as durable as a fine china mouse. Perry is no longer an option at third base. At season’s end, he was still having problems sorting out what needed to be done for a knee injury, so he isn’t a good bet to be able to help the Tribe in ’97.
1996  A quarterback and pitcher in college, Perry has had to overcome shoulder and wrist injuries to reach his current level of play. Although a little old, he certainly seems capable of playing first base at least as well as the departed Paul Sorrento, and at a much lower price. Doesn't have the power you expect from a first baseman, but hits for a very solid average.
