BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2005 It stands to reason that if a team has a 25-man roster, it should get 25 men to fill those spots. The Orioles used one of those spots on Luis Lopez for the entire season, which goes a long way toward undermining all of the work that Keith Woolner, Bill James, and others have done on the concept of "replacement level." At least they won't do it again, releasing him and replacing him with the comparatively Bonds-like Chris Gomez.
2003 Lopez started the year with the Brewers injured. They proceeded to string him out until June, using the maximum allowable time for a rehab assignment, and then the maximum time between the end of rehab and activation, all to try and avoid eating his contract. (Suggestion for new GMs: Backup infielders are spare parts. Never, ever commit future dollars and a multi-year contract to a spare part!) Lopez is a barely adequate utility infielder, since he can play three positions and canít hit a lick. So why did Hargrove use him, of all people, as a pinch hitter three times as often as anyone else, even though he was almost always a worse hitter than the man he replaced? He was released after the season, and will now be a similar nuisance to the Rockies.
2002 One of the Brewersí basic problems is identifying whatís good about a player, within his limits. Lopez is a good hitter for a utility infielder, and thatís as far as it goes. If Lopez canít hold off Elvis Pena in camp, heíll have to be traded or go through waivers. Keeping both would waste space on both the 25- and 40-man rosters, and with this team, you have to expect that a non-roster invitee or two will come north from spring training.
2001 For a few months last summer, he thought he was the other Luis Lopez and hit a bunch of home runs. Donít bet on a repeat. He could luck into some playing time if Belliard or Mark Loretta comes up lame.
2000 Rey Ordonez was healthy almost all year and hit well enough that Lopezís role--taking over at shortstop when Ordonez was injured or lifted for a pinch-hitter--was eliminated. He wasn't on the postseason roster, which gives us a good idea of his standing with Metsí officials. Whether that was about his play, or a gesture to mollify Ordonez, with whom Lopez had a fight, isnít clear.
1997 Lopez was a promising shortstop two years ago, but a blown-out knee cost him a crucial year, and itís doubtful heíll ever be a starter in the majors. A shame, since he looked like he was going to be a player.
