2009 After spending 2007 as a Seibu Lion, Jason Johnson returned stateside and bided his time in Las Vegas for half the season before joining the Dodgers as a long reliever/spot starter; if he didn’t pitch all that well, at least he didn’t pitch all that often.

Is a table worth 100 words? Johnson's hit rate, strikeout rate and home-run rate were left essentially unchanged from 2003. He gave up a few more doubles and triples, but compensated by walking one fewer hitter per appearance. And yet, his ERA was up nearly a full point, simply because he gave up what he gave up at inopportune times. Johnson's true level of ability lies somewhere in between his past two seasons. Regardless, the hope is that the Tigers won't need to sign third-tier free agents like this as their farm system becomes more robust.
2003 Johnson’s season was considered a disappointment. It was loaded with injuries: a dead arm in April, a broken finger in May, elbow tendonitis in July, and another broken finger in September. In some respects, though, it was better than his “breakthrough” 2001, with more strikeouts and fewer walks. The big difference was that he allowed 14 fewer hits than expected, given his balls in play and the team’s defense, in 2001, against 8 more than expected in 2002. Balance those out, and that leaves him as an average major league pitcher, and there’s a lot of fates worse than that.
2002 Why did Johnson have his best season? First, he's a fly-ball pitcher, and prior to the season the Orioles moved the Camden Yards fences back six to 20 feet, depending on the direction. The result? Johnson's home-run rate at home last year was just .87 per nine innings, compared to 1.74 on the road. That's a drop from 2000, when it was 1.91 at home and 1.61 on the road. Why did he collapse after August 1? His last nine starts were against the Blue Jays, Red Sox, A's, and Yankees.
2001 The good luck finally deserted Jason Johnson. Statistically, his performance wasn’t much different from his 1998 and 1999 seasons, except that the timing changed. The ratio of his EqA with men on base to his EqA with the bases empty was a very good .983 coming into the 2000 season. The ratio jumped to a horrific 1.240 last year. Unless the experience broke his confidence completely, he’ll return to his normal self: a pitcher who is 0.50-1.00 runs per game worse than average.
2000 He was traded for Danny Clyburn in the spring, and the O’s got the better of the deal. Johnson is a late bloomer, toiling for five years in the minors before suddenly catapulting from A ball to the majors in 1997, and he still looks like he's learning how to pitch. He finished the season strong, winning his last five decisions to finish above .500. I'm not sure why, but I've got a good feeling about him going into 2000.
1998 Johnson is a huge man, and you know how scouts love big pitchers. He wasn’t 6'6" coming out of high school, which is why the Pirates got him as an undrafted free agent. He never made it past the Carolina League in his first four minor-league seasons, but finally put a few things together this year and shot up to the majors. His control has always been decent, but his strikeout rates went through the roof and he was effective enough in Pittsburgh to warrant a shot at the pen. Otherwise, he’s ticketed for Durham’s rotation for ’98.
