BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2007 The last thing a player in Larry Bigbie`s situation needed was a hernia, but that`s what he got, and it severely limited his playing time in a season in which a corner outfielder on the make could have gone places with the Cardinals.
2006 For such an unremarkable player, Bigbie caused quite a stir last summer. The Rockies flipped Eric Byrnes to Baltimore for Bigbie in anticipation of a deal with the Red Sox that would include Kelly Shoppach. The Sox reneged, resulting in their entire front office pointing fingers at each other like it was the end of `Reservoir Dogs.` The Rockies claimed they never would have done the deal for Bigbie if they weren`t going to get Shoppach. Since we`re operating in a game where oversight from the commissioner`s office only seems to come into play where major headlines are concerned, the Red Sox were embarrassed but the Rockies were screwed. Subsequently, they settled for moving him to St. Louis to get Ray King this winter.
2005 Bigbie returned to form, following up an over-his-head 2003 season with a more typical performance. He's a problem player: Good enough that you can't simply push him aside, but not so good that he's going to lead you to a championship. That's especially true if, as in 2004, he turns out to be your best outfielder.
2003 A capable enough fourth or fifth outfielder right now, Bigbie’s future is going to be determined by how the Orioles handle all of their first basemen and DHs. Given his modest abilities, he’s likely to be on a perpetual shuttle between Triple-A and the majors. He started 2002 as if he were angry to be in Rochester, hitting over .360 into June. Then his shoulder started acting up, and he sprained his ankle, and he barely slugged .300 after that.
2002 Bigbie was called up to Baltimore on three separate occasions last year, and after a dismal start (a .155 EqA in the first call-up), he hit almost exactly as well as he had in the minors. After spending the winter working out, he doubled his isolated power without sacrificing singles, walks, or strikeouts. That’s significant improvement, almost enough to make comparisons to Andy Van Slyke a little less silly. Bigbie should spend most of 2002 at Rochester, but he looks like a guy who will build a useful career.
2001 Larry Bigbie, along with Keith Reed, Brian Roberts, Rich Stahl, and Mike Paradis, was among the Orioles’ seven first-round draft picks in 1999. So far, he’s a wasted pick: lousy batting average, strikes out too much, very little power, no speed. Worst of all, he showed absolutely no improvement from 1999 and was badly overmatched when he was rushed up to Double-A Bowie.
