BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2007 Relievers are a volatile lot. Maybe it`s that luck plays a bigger hand in their results given the small sample sizes of their annual workloads, maybe it`s that it`s more difficult to maintain all the different mechanical aspects of pitching when you only throw so many pitches at a time, or perhaps that lack of consistency is what put many relievers in the pen in the first place. Bauer is actually one of the more consistent relievers within his range; he`s been a more or less league-average pitcher since 2001. He also has a low-stuff, strikeout-free approach, which explains why the normally feckless Orioles didn`t hesitate to cut bait in 2005. Bauer adjusted to pitching in Texas by kicking up his ground-ball rate; he only allowed one home run in Arlington in 146 batters faced. PECOTA sees his unimpressive K/BB rate catching up with him in 2007, and it`s right.
2006 Bauer was the odd man out when the team decided to bring up a third catcher, and though he popped off a bit more than he should have at the news he was going down again, he did have a point. He`s been a reliable, if unspectacular, member of the Oriole pen for four years, wanting but never getting a chance to start. After this latest demotion he knew that he and the Orioles were pretty much done. He`ll take his chances with the Rangers in 2006.
2005 Bauer was steadily tattooed in the first half of the season, piling up a 6.61 ERA before going on the DL with an inflamed nerve in his elbow. After returning, he was sent to Ottawa (and got himself in hot water with some unfortunate comments about the team's management), but at least there he got to start. Returning to the Orioles in September, he was excellent. Bauer struggles pitching from the stretch more than most pitchers, which is why his real ERA tends to run higher than his PERA. If he gets that straightened out and gets a chance to start, he could surprise.
2004 A failed-well, failed is such a strong word, let's try unsuccessful-starter throughout his minor league career, Bauer has emerged as a capable middle reliever, although he still wants to start. He had a huge split last year between men on (.845 OPS) and bases empty (.589), which explains the gap between his EqERA and PERA; that hasn't been a problem for him before, and isn't likely to continue. If all of the other kids struggle in camp, he might get a shot at the rotation, but don't hold your breath.
2003 A career starter, Bauer was forced to learn how to pitch from the pen at the major league level, gradually becoming more of a long reliever as the season went on. He was pretty good in the role, except for a five-week stretch in May and June where his ERA topped ten; if you do the math, that means he had an ERA under 2.70 for the other 21 weeks of the season. He’ll probably stay in that role in 2003, although he does have a chance at the rotation.
2002 In the Orioles organization last year, if you could make it to Rochester and pitch a good game—just one—then you could get yourself called up to the bigs. Bauer went 10-4 for a dull 60-84 Rochester team, easily the best season in his career, and he was rewarded with a half-dozen Baltimore starts. As a result, he threw 207 innings, 55 more than he's ever thrown in one year, which makes him an injury risk in 2002.
