2003 Roster filler. Six stops in three years, six negative ďstuffĒ scores. Thereís no reason that Buddie has a job over a hundred guys all over the minors. Itís just luck. Life isnít a meritocracy, there is no Santa Claus, bad things happen to good people, and the people whoíve been jerks to you arenít going to pay for it down the road. That is all.
2002 A nondescript reliever straight from the Age of Clutterbuck, Buddie is not to be confused for the next David Weathers. Heís more of a command pitcher, and he has next to no upside. At best, he provides some value as an eleventh pitcher who can be designated for assignment at any time without real concern about losing him.
2001 Teams donít look for "good" long relievers. By definition, a long relieverís innings donít mean much to the teamís performance, so they're used to get a wild kid some experience or get a struggling pitcher straightened out. If they simply went for the best available pitcher, Mike Buddie would have had a job long ago. He isnít quite good enough to be anything more than a middleman, so he gets stuck in Triple-A year after year.
2000 The additions of Jason Grimsley and Dan Naulty forced Buddie back to Triple-A, where he had a second good season. Buddie is good enough to be a middle reliever in the majors, and if he winds up in Kansas City or Seattle, he might be the best pitcher in the bullpen. The same could be said for about 35 other Triple-A relievers, a half-dozen NFL quarterbacks, three Prospectus authors, two of our wives and Eric Cartman.
1999 Jim Bruske, without the frequent flyer miles on Southwest. Buddie throws harder than Bruske, but has the same outlook: he can be an effective middle reliever and contribute to a winning team. Buddie has the added advantage of recent starting experience, so he could be a valuable swingman. He's close to establishing himself.
1998 Hard thrower had a good year at Columbus with no defined role. He still has a bit of the prospect sheen left, and is talented enough that he could grab an opportunity in the spring, or with an injury, and be successful.
1997 Heís a staff filler at Norwich, showed improvement in his second year. Buddie has chance to get beyond AAA, even though he keeps the ball in the park pretty well.
