2007 The definition of a replacement-level pitcher, John Halama was released by the Orioles in June and couldn`t find another team to pick him up . . . not that anyone should have.
2006 Halama is a rare bird these days--the lefty swing man who actually gets used in spots in the rotation or to work the middle innings. Generally, this type of pitcher is going the way of the dodo, which is probably why he was yet another one of the in-season saviors who leapt to the team`s rescue, only to plunge to the pavement. If he`s your 11th pitcher, he won`t kill you, but he`s a free agent as of mid-January.
2005 A left-handed pitcher with home-run tendencies, moving to Fenway Park? Yikes. Halama lives and dies by how well he can spot his pitches, and while his control was better than usual last year, it isn't enough to turn him into a valuable commodity. He can chew up some innings in long relief and spot starting, which each of his last three teams has recognized.
2003 As a relief arm, Halama was far more effective than as a starter. His strikeouts were way up, while his other rates held steady. There are now two seasons of evidence supporting the Halama-as-ace-reliever-and-bad-starter theory, which is enough to start making decisions on. A full season of relief would make Halama look good enough to win a starting job, which would start this whole cycle over again. Halama seems to have the pitches for starting, but heís just not that good at it. For those of you are who fans of The Emperorís New Groove: when Halama comes in, turn to the guy next to you, clap your hands, and say ďYay, itís Halama again!Ē every time our boy comes in. Then look at your hands and go ďoh.Ē
2002 The Mariners were unwise to not take advantage of Halama's gaudy 14-9 record in 2000 by trading him for some minor-league position players with upside. Halama looked bad in his 17 starts in 2001. This got him demoted to Tacoma, where he tossed a perfect game. After his recall, he pitched well out of the bullpen; he should be a swing man for the Mariners in 2002.
2001 A slight loss of command down in the zone can spell doom for a soft tosser, which is what happened to John Halama last season. His pitches found too much of the plate, the league pummeling his feeble assortment at a .308/.361/.473 clip. By August, Piniella had lost all confidence in him and would trot out the hook at the first sniff of trouble. Halama is prime trade bait and will be overvalued by many clubs since good run support helped him to a misleading 14-9 record.
2000 A few excerpts from the Piniella Primer: no high-fives with the Mariner Moose, never take anything from the post-game buffet that canít be ingested with a straw and donít put three soft-tossing left-handers in your starting rotation. The last dictum caused Halama to be miscast as a situational reliever to open the season. Not long after Butch Henry tore his labrum, Halama was dropped into the rotation and reeled off eight consecutive quality starts. His repertoire is uncannily similar to Jamie Moyerís, so if anything trickles down from the off-speed master, he should have a nice little career.
1999 Halama was sent to the Mariners after the season as the PTNBL in the Johnson deal. Heís an excellent control pitcher who has nothing left to prove in the minors after going 25-6 the last two years. Heís old for a prospect (four months older than Andy Pettite) and has little star potential, but he may be a perfect fit in Seattle, being cut from the same mold as Jamie Moyer. If any young pitcher is going to get past Lou Piniella, itís going to be one who doesnít beat himself with walks.
1998 If Kile walks or Holt is still recovering from his surgery, the Astros have said that Halama will get first crack at a rotation slot. Because he started his career in relief, heís avoided arm troubles. Now he has a knee-knocking curve to complement a fastball he knows how to spot, and a pickoff move that would make Terry Mulholland proud.
1997 Halama is a tall lefty bopping between the rotation and the bullpen. He absolutely skewers the running game, with 14 pickoffs in 1996. Since the Astros seem confused about what to do with him, itís hard to predict his future.
