2010-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Sometimes love takes unusual and unexpected turns. Certainly it was nothing I had planned, although the fact that the age difference between them is kind of minimal didn't hurt. It started because she's not into baseball but SHE is, we both have the same favorite player (Ronnie Belliard), and that's just too good for me to pass up. Don't judge me, man.
(The VORPal Sword from Minniehaha, MN)
Was watching Mets-Dodgers last night and Ron Darling said something about the way Ronnie Belliard keeps resurfacing; my reponse was something to the effect that with that gut, he's quite buoyant. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do the Dodgers try and re-sign O-dawg or let him walk?
(Dying2Know from La la land)
It seems that relationship's irreparably breached, which is why talking about Blake DeWitt might not be just bold talk. I could see them bringing back September favorite Ronnie Belliard on a low-end deal and using both at the keystone, subbing for Blake, and maybe shuffle things around enough now and again to give James Loney's slack bat a break by using Blake at first. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-09-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Christina, the Nats have 4 good young position players (Dukes, Milledge, Zimmerman and Flores) and some pitching prospects. What moves do they make next to get themselves closer to respectability?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
Health is going to make a big difference, to be sure, and I'll look forward to seeing what Will's take is on how much of the problem is systemic (if at all), a matter of training staff getting swamped, and how much it's management's fault for committing to both Dmitri Young and Nick Johnson. In terms of moves, I think the sad fact of the matter is that they're just going to have to be patient. Can Austin Kearns recapture any of his value? Either of the first basemen? Sorting that out is going to tell them how much bargaining power they have, and they won't have that over the winter. OTOH, does Ronnie Belliard's inexpensive contract make him a commodity? There's a lot to sort out, so I wouldn't bet on any instant solutions. After the teardown by Omar and the Lorians, there was a lot of work to be done; consider it a cautionary tale of the fate that probably awaits the Astros. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)Big logjam in the middle infield for the Nats and it appears Trader Jim's having trouble finding a taker for Lopez. What do you think will happen?
(macman from DC)
I'm not sure "big logjam" is the term I'd use, but "corpse-choked gully" would be too cruel. We're talking Ronnie Belliard and Cristian Guzman, and I wouldn't want to bank on either. The real problem is that Lopez really isn't much of a shortstop, so any proposition of using him again as the swing middle infielder to cover for whichever starter breaks first runs up against that. Teams looking for a shortstop (like the Orioles) shouldn't put too much value on Lopez, and haven't.

I guess I don't see the depth, in case they deal Lopez. Pete Orr? Willie Harris? We're talking second base types who can't really play short either. Aaron Boone can't really play third. It makes for a potentially oddly disjointed bench. (Christina Kahrl)

BP Roundtables

DateRoundtable NameComment
2009-10-21 17:00:00NLCS Game 5Well, that's one more home run than Ronnie Belliard has hit in this series. (John Perrotto)
2009-10-16 13:00:00NLCS Game Two/ALCS Game Oneccmonter (Waterloo, Canada): What happened to Torre's quick hook? Kershaw was clearly in trouble and Torre has a full stock in the bullpen.

I wrote all about that issue in today's column. Joe wrote his own piece and arrived at completely the opposite conclusion, which should if nothing else stand as a data point the next time the fanboys accuse us of groupthink.

I simply don't think you can look at Kershaw in that situation after three walks, three wild pitches, 31 pitches in the inning and God knows what else running through his head and think that having the platoon advantage against Howard is alone enough to outweigh the information that the rest of the inning has given you. Elbert may not have been the man for the job, but Torre could have brought in Randy Wolf for a cameo while double-switching Orlando Hudson (who pinch-hit after the damage was done) and Ronnie Belliard (who'd just ended the inning). The difference between a 3-1 game and a 5-1 game proved decisive. (Jay Jaffe)
