YearComment
2005 He's still living off the rotting carcass of the 17-4 record that he managed with the Mariners in 2001, a feat that was only slightly luckier than Robert Varkonyi winning the World Series of Poker, or The Tony Danza Show making it past the pilot. There's no indication at this point that he's a competent big league pitcher.
2004 Only the 37th pitcher that Allard Baird traded for as the Royals' rotation disintegrated down the stretch. Abbott, as he usually is, was unhittable at times; unfortunately, he gives up so many walks and home runs that he generally has to be close to unhittable to be effective. His style plays best in a really big park like Safeco Field. Instead he signed with the Devil Rays, reuniting with Lou Piniella, for whom he won 17 games in Seattle in 2001.
2003 You read it here last year, and indeed, this season Abbott fessed up to having fought through a groin strain last year, and after continued ineffectiveness, it turned out he had a torn labrum all along. A torn labrum is a hard injury to come back from anyway. He could be effective if he comes back at full strength, but that could be as far away as next year, and he’ll be 36 then. The Mariners released him.
2002 He’s injured. His release points and mechanics were all over the place last season, and as a result, the wheels would fly off, and he never seemed to have easy outings. Maybe it's a torn rotator cuff, a strained tendon...it doesn’t matter. The Mariners, if they’re smart and ruthless, will hurry and sign him and his 17-4 record to a contract to avoid arbitration and then immediately trade him to someone who doesn’t do his medical homework, like Gord Ash...shoot, too late.
2001 Injuries to Jamie Moyer and Freddy Garcia gave him the chance to enter the rotation, an opportunity he seized with both hands, pitching as well as any of the team’s other starters. The main concern I have about Paul Abbott is the alarming drop in his strikeout rate, a result of him leaving his change-up at training camp. He needs to find it again because he’s a fastball/change-up pitcher trying to survive by spotting a heater that barely grazes 90 mph. The Mariners’ surplus of starters means that Abbott is a prime candidate to return to the bullpen.
2000 Abbott is a scrap-heap find who throws 93 mph, is effective against both left-handed and right-handed hitters, strikes batters out and has decent control. He was a top prospect in the Twins' organization before his career was derailed by a string of bizarre, unrelated injuries. He would be better utilized as a starter, but Piniella plans to use him as the setup man for Mesa. Regardless of the role, he'll be effective if he can stay healthy.
1996  Has actually developed into a halfway decent pitcher, and is only 28. Wouldn't be surprised to see him surface in a bullpen somewhere and have a good season or three in middle relief.
