BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 It was the classic “boy sneezes, boy strains right intercostal muscle, boy learns he has polycystic kidney disease” story for Brian Tallet. He was a throw-in in the Colby Rasmus trade, and the Blue Jays released him in September.
2011 Here’s an exhaustive list of baseball attributes we can be sure Brian Tallet possesses: tall, left-handed, mutton-choppy. Those features vary in their usefulness in recording outs against major-league hitters, but despite his high-80s fastball, poor peripherals, and uneven facial hair, Tallet hangs on. His platoon splits were uncharacteristically extreme in 2010 (righties hit .320/.415/.617 against him), suggesting that he may not have been hiding the ball well with his three-quarters delivery against batters of opposite handedness. After being outrighted from the 40-man roster in November, Tallet elected to pursue free agency and hooked on with the Cardinals.
2010 Tallet’s career ERA as a starter is more than a run higher than his career ERA as a reliever. That makes him something less than the handy utility pitcher the Jays believed he was last year when they gave him 25 starts and got a 5.41 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, and 1.6 K/BB in return. Not that they had many alternatives. Entering 2010, Tallet should be back in the long-relief role that worked so well for him the previous three years, though one worries that he’ll be among the first names called should a rotation hole emerge.
2009 Another former Cleveland lefty, Tallet seems to have found his place in Toronto's pen. In each of his three years with the Jays, his walk rate and ERA have decreased and his strikeout-to-walk ratio has increased. The changes are small, but they’re good trends to have. Tallet doesn’t have a significant split and is a converted starter, so he’s best used as an old-fashioned multi-inning middle reliever, and given the holes in the Jays' rotation in '09, that might make for a lot of work.
2008 The injury to Ryan created a roster spot that Tallet filled ably, although it wasn't exactly a glamour role. Often working multiple innings, tallet made the majority of his appearances (32 of 48) with the team behind, and from July 7 through the end of the season, the Jays went 2-20 in games in which he appeared. His home-run rate was a fluke, as he's not a ground-ball pitcher; expect his ERA to rise accordingly.
2007 Several of marginal Blue Jays prospects that we`ve talked about in this chapter might wind up with a career a lot like Brian Tallet`s, who finally got his first real taste of the big leagues at age 29 after having been acquired last January for someone named Bubbie Buzachero. Unfortunately Tallet, who was once a bit of a stathead favorite before Tommy John surgery limited him to the bullpen, might find that this major league tenure is short-lived, as he lacks Scott Downs` big splits against lefties or Davis Romero`s fresh-faced upside.
2006 Tallet underwent Tommy John Surgery in late 2003, returned to action in late 2004, and spent 2005 regaining his strength with Buffalo. Given his age and the number of younger, more exciting starting pitching prospects queued up in the Indians` system, it would seem his best remaining hope with the Tribe is to find work in long relief or as a swing man. Dealt to Toronto, where he might help out in that role or as a fifth starter.
2005 Another Tommy John survivor, Tallet pitched about as well as could be expected, given that he retuned to the mound less than a year after surgery. After being TJ'd, the second year is usually better.
2003 Tallet confuses people. He’s big (6¢7=) and he’s big (a stone over two hundred pounds). Drafted out of LSU, he drew raves for his know-how and smarts, and dominated in the low minors with a fastball that might touch 92 with a tailwind. He gets by mixing his fastball with a slider and a lower-gear changeup. You’ve got to cheer for guys like Tallet who have unexpected skill sets. It says a lot for an organization when they find roles for oddball prospects, rather than focusing on, say, their inability to hit three digits on the radar gun when closing. With a couple of rotation slots open and his nifty debut, he’ll get a long look in camp, and should be in the rotation to stay by season’s end.
2002 The Kinston pitching staff that helped win Victor Martinez an MVP award was home to most of the Tribe's best pitching prospects. Tallet is a tall drink of water out of LSU who gets into the 90s and mixes in a slider. The decision to leave him at Kinston all year was conservative, but he could jump forward in a hurry in 2002. In addition to Tallet and Alex Herrera, Kyle Denney and Shane Wallace both pitched well for Kinston. Unfortunately, both also were shut down due to injuries and subsequently underwent Tommy John surgery. Friends, there really is no such thing as a pitching prospect.
