2002 There comes a point at which you have to say "enough," that being left-handed should only take a player so far. Heath Murray has thrown nearly 150 innings in the majors, with more walks than strikeouts and a 6.32 ERA. Aside from his freakish season in Triple-A (22 hits in 36 innings, a 44-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio), he hasn’t had an ERA below 4.00 since 1996. Is having a lefty specialist like this really better than keeping a right-handed reliever with far better credentials? Guys like Murray—who has been released—will be the reason why the trend towards left-handed relief at any cost will one day reverse itself.
2000 He reportedly added a few feet to his fastball in the 1998-99 offseason and came into 1999 looking for a spot with the big club. He got a tryout as emergency starter and later, in the bullpen, but was rocked in both roles. Placed on waivers after the season ended and claimed by Cincinnati, where his prospects don’t look any rosier.
1999 A reliable Triple-A starter, and shouldn't be counted on for anything else. He's got some good breaking stuff, and keeps his defense busy, but his fastball is Bob Tewksbury slow - and he doesn't have Tewksbury's control to make up for it.
1998 Heath Murray was the Padres’ most vaunted starting prospect in 1996, which tells you something about the pitchers in the Padres system. He doesn’t have a particularly strong repertoire, so he relies on his defense and his placement. Not much of a prospect; like former Padre washout Glenn Dishman, Murray lacks bite.
1997 The organization is very high on him, despite an average repertoire. He gets high marks for working fast, command and makeup, along with a plus fastball. He started strong, finished awful, not a good sign. He will probably start the year at Las Vegas, and a good three months will have him in San Diego.
1996  Unadjusted, he allowed just six homers last year between A-ball and AA. He's still pretty young, but if he can maintain that kind of pitching in the PCL this year, he'll mark himself as a prospect.
