2003 Selby spent about four months on the major league roster and started 38 games in the field, but I can’t remember seeing him. Maybe he’s a Gray Man. There’s got to be a reason he hung around—ah. His hitting and play at third base made Fryman look okay, which allowed Fryman to retire with some modicum of dignity.
2001 If you need a Jeff Manto fix in the future, we direct you to Bill Selby. He’s played only 845 minor-league games, so he’ll need at least five years to catch up to Manto. Like Manto, Selby spent time in Japan, which is usually Bobby Valentine’s cue to sign you. He slugged .560 against right-handed pitching in Buffalo. Remember, Keith Lockhart didn't make it until he was past 30 and the Indians’ lineup is going to have a few weak right-handed bats. Selby can play second base as well as third base and the outfield, so he’d be a good last man on the bench.
1997 Selby’s utility infield material and can help a team in that role. Good secondary skills; not enough to hold a regular job, but with three right-handed hitters at second, short and third, the Red Sox can use a guy like this.
1996  I'd normally consider those last two years to be the signal of a hot prospect, but he is already 25 and still hasn't played in AAA. He's shown enough hitting to crack a major league roster as a backup, but he'll be hard-pressed to find a starting role.
