2002 One of the more bizarre moments of last season was Torborg scheming in September about how to get Mordecai and Geoff Blum to both play nine positions in the same game this March. Itís disturbing enough that a major-league manager would spend time plotting a spring-training stunt during the regular season, but perhaps even more distressing is that Torborg plans to have Mordecai on the roster again this year.
2001 Can you think of another utility infielder with this kind of job security? Going back to his Atlanta days, Mike Mordecai has been a utility infielder for seven years with no shot at ever becoming a regular. Even Alex Arias got a couple of months as a starter once. Is this what people are pining for when they say baseball was better before free agency? Mordecai gets job security, and the Expos get cost certainty. Itís downright un-American, I tell you.
2000 Mordecai re-signed for 2000 with a one-year club option in an extremely ill-timed decision. Roster spots matter, and the Expos are a bad offensive team that needs every run it can get. Whatís the point of carrying defensive replacements if you donít have leads to protect? With better hitters like Blum and Coquillette ready, there was no reason to give Mordecai any guarantees.
1999 Spent the year about 30 seconds away from losing his job, but folks like Jose Vidro couldn't string together two hits to take the utility slot away. If Felipe goes for a glove in the middle like Coquillette, Mordecai should finally hit the road this spring.
1997 There is no line that accurately distinguishes between major leaguers and minor leaguers. Luck matters a great deal. There is no rhyme or reason to why Turner Ward has a job and Patrick Lennon doesnít. Hopefully for the Mordecai family, Mike is now perceived as a competent major league backup rather than a minor league journeyman.
1996  Someone who was in the right place at the right time, and made the most of his opportunity. The line between Mike Mordecai, career minor leaguer and Mike Mordecai, career major-league backup infielder is very, very thin. He looks like he crossed it this year.
